Audio glitches, even with no plugins loaded

Having trouble with GP4: I’m getting audio glitches (popping) when playing virtual instruments. I’m also getting constant glitches when playing YouTube videos in a browser if GP is also open. The YT glitches happen even if GP is open to a blank rig, ie, it doesn’t matter if there are even plugins or anything loaded in GP. The glitches stop immediately when I close GP. Likewise, the audio glitches when playing are not plugin specific.

There is no significant CPU or memory usage going on. Activity monitor shows the CPU is under 10% and memory pressure is minimal, basically nothing. There is no spike in usage when a pop occurs.

From what I can tell the glitches are simply the result of GP being open, since it doesn’t even matter there are even plugins loaded in the GP rig. And by loaded, I mean not just that they’re off but that the whole rig is blank. There’s nothing in it. I used to sometimes get this problem on my old M1, but that was after having a massive rig open (with like 15 plugins in it) and using it for weeks (or months even). Right now, I can’t seem to play anything. Even having GP open without any plugins is messing up other audio, eg, in a browser.

I’ve tried restarting, redownloading GP4, all that. I don’t get this problem when using Logic or other programs.

Are you using an Audio Interface?
How looks your Audio options window in Gig Performer?
Did you try with Gig Performer 5?

This is just with my MIDI controller plugged into the computer. My interface is off. Sample rate is 48000 and buffer is 16 samples, which are the settings I had on my M1 Mac with no problem.

Also, keep in mind the glitches are happening even with no incoming signal and even with completely blank rigs (no plugins). I was able to run well over a dozen plugins with these same settings on my M1.

I don’t have GP5.

What happens when it’s on?

I just tried. The problem persisted.

Why are you using this setting?
You can use 128 without noticing the latency (or 64).

You can download a trial version of GP5

That is unlikely to change anything

Indeed. And if you are setting that buffer size, it wouldn’t surprise me if other apps (like browsers) can’t handle that small a buffer.

Once again, 1) my M1 handled this setting fine and 2) Logic is not having this problem. Also, latency is cumulative, so I keep latency low wherever possible, and I definitely notice more latency at higher buffer settings. Not so much playing keys but definitely playing guitar.

I think the minimum buffer size in Logic is 32. (I may be wrong)

Plus, many budget audio interfaces don’t support the buffer size of 16.
I doubt that a built-in audio chip will work OK with this buffer size.

I still get pops at 32 samples, and AGAIN, I had my M1 set to 16 samples and never had this problem. The interface is not a budget unit. It’s a Clarett 2Pre. But the problem is happening even with no interface. I do wish people would read before commenting.

Also 16 samples was the default setting when I installed GP4.

I think 512 is the default (at least on Windows, not sure about macOS).

OK, please connect your audio interface and then create a screenshot of your Audio Settings in Gig Performer.

That is to be expected.
I’m considering use cases with audio interface connected only.

No one here plays with 16 sample buffer size. No one.
Most apps don’t even support a buffer size that small.
LogicPro doesn’t—the lowest it supports is 32.

Do you know this?

When you switch to 128 samples does the issue still occur?
Are you using Rosetta?

Hm…

You don’t use Clarett’s outputs, right?

If you use its outputs, does the problem occur?

I’m not sure. The reason I’m using the Mac speakers is that my headphone cable is broken. I should have a new cable coming by end of day, but I won’t be able to try the Clarett’s output until then.
