Warning when updating to Win11 24H2

Just a quick heads-up for anyone updating their PCs to Win11 24H2. Unlike previous Windows Updates, this one seems to break your current GP activation. I know this is a regular thing with macOS, but is the first time I have personally experienced this on Windows.

So, before doing the 24H2 Windows Update, remember deactivate your GP installation and reactivate after the update.

I did not remember, but I still had an activation available, so I didn’t need to get on my knees and beg forgiveness for having to ask (not for the first time) the good folks at Deskew to fix that.

While you will be prompted for your license details, an additional activation should not be wasted.

Hmm, my Windows 11 back up laptop just asked to update. I forgot about this post and let it update and shut down.

I have not yet restarted the laptop.

Any suggestions? Am I too late?

An this post as well

You are not having a gig soon, are you?

A few years ago I lost my license after a windows update, but it was possible to roll back the windows update, successfully start GP and deactivate the license.

In the meantime I had also sent a mail to gigperformer support and they had reset my activations as well.

If you’ve only shutdown your laptop and you’ve not disabled the fast startup (in Windows), then when you switch on your laptop it should not apply the updates yet. To apply the updates you have to restart your laptop.

If you disabled the fast startup, then shutdown + power on is effectively the same as a restart and updates will be applied.

I’m not sure about disabling fast startup.

I did try to implement the optimization guide.

I opted for the “apply updates and shut down” option last night.

So, at some point (this morning?) I will turn on the laptop.

So, I guess I’ll just turn on the laptop and see what happens.

I guess, if necessary, I’ll use another another activation and ask GP support to give me a new one (no rush)(?).

In that case the updates are already halfway installed and booting the laptop will finish the install. After that your laptop will be updated (whether you like it or not).

Thx, Frank.

[I just restarted everything on my backup laptop and did not have any issues. I guess I got lucky? (Or, for all I know, it was a different update).]

No issues for me. Last update was 24h2 and no issues with licensing at all.

I updated to 2H24 on 3 machines. On two of them GP didn’t ask for a new license, the third did.

You get a limited number of licenses. When doing Windows feature updates always deactivate your Gig Performer license prior to performing the update.

Certain plugins require this procedure too. VB3-II is one of them.

Guess I read this one too late. Now after reactivation I appear to have lost ASIO support for my Radial USB Pro and the Window Audio driver makes all my plugs sound like a f***g mandolin. Is there a thread for rolling back the update/otherwise fixing the issues w/ this one? I have gig on Thursday.

I would contact Radial Engineering and see if they are aware of the issue and/or have a solution.

It’s stressful having to deal with these kinds of issues when you have a show coming up. It’s been said around here many times, and obviously you’re aware of it now, but you should never do major updates within a few weeks of a scheduled performance. Any reward of update is just not worth the risk of something not working.

Some updates can be rolled back the first 10 days after the update. You need to do this from the settings app:

(The picture is Dutch, but clear enough about the location in the settings app)

If you’re beyond the 10 days window, you need to reinstall an older version, keeping your files and settings, but apparently it’s not very easy to acquire an older Windows version (I read somewhere)

Unfortunately, the update was applied to my computer without my knowledge. I started up Gig Performer this morning for church services and was met with the warning that the software wasn’t activated. Is there a way to check how many activations remain?

Thankfully, I was able to “re-activate” it so I could continue without issue, but I’m worried that if it happens again in the future, I may not have such an easy time with this. I couldn’t imagine the issue if I had been unable to “re-activate” the software.

How is that possible —as far as I know, when you either open or close a Windows machine, it will generally tell you that updates are going to be applied.

Yes

That said, as long as you don’t reactivate too often, you won’t lose activations.
