I had a similar situation once and I am a little embarrassed to admit it. After struggling with the problem for a while, I found that the AC plug wasn’t all the way in and the laptop was running on battery. Windows laptops don’t run nearly as fast on battery as when plugged in (properly) even when the power settings tell it you want maximum performance regardless.

Just to confirm what _wo1f is saying;
I’m running GP on an about 10 year old HP laptop with an i5 processor and just 12 Gb of RAM.
I think I have my power settings set for maximum performance even on battery.
However, on AC, plugins like the Hammond B-3X run without a glitch. Unplug the AC power and it immediately starts crackeling.

That happened to me once. The laptop wasn’t on AC power and that caused cpu issues and crackling in rackspaces with multiple layers and plugins.
