Hi folks! I’ve seen advice posted here about not mixing AU, VST, and VST3 versions of the same plugin in a given gig file and that makes sense. I’ve created a bunch of rackspaces using VST3 but I’ve also purchased third-party rackspaces from sound designers who use VST. We all use the Arturia Collection and there are some inevitable VST/VST3 “collisions.”
I’d like to get all of my rackspaces using the same format for the plugins (for example, replace all VST versions of, say, a Prophet V with a VST3 version everywhere) but I want to avoid reprogramming settings if possible. I found this thread about moving from a Mac to a Windows platform and relying on each plugin’s export/import functionality (if it’s there at all) but I’m hoping that since this is all on one machine (M2 Mac, GP5) and swapping in essentially the same plugin that an operation similar to Quick Replace would preserve settings.
I know, I’m probably dreaming, but does anyone know if this is possible?
Sadly, I don’t think that’s possible. Different formats of a plugin are different plugins, for all intents and purposes. You can save/load presets, and sometimes copy/paste settings between formats, but there’s no way to directly switch over the plugin settings from one format to another that I know of.
Alas, that’s what I was afraid of. The good news is that it’s a good excuse to pour some sipping whiskey and settle in for some preset management sessions! There’s always a bright side. Thanks!
I have not tried this myself but it is possible that if you use the plugin’s own preset manager to save the settings, then maybe the same plugin (but different format) can reload that preset.
My bet is that this will work for some plugins but not for others - it would depend completely on how the plugin developer implemented their internal preset management.
Besides getting the plugin configured by the plugin’s own preset manager you also have to take into account, that you have to remap all your widgets…
I’m currently preparing a bigger rework for my new band project, where I want to share some of my rackspaces with the 2nd keyboard player who is considering to switch to a GP setup - most probably on windows
So first step: create plugin presets within the plugin. Then kick out the remaing AU plugins and replace by VST3, reload presets, remap widgets. Replace/Create new GP Presets where I need them.
Some annoying work. However: good to do it now, alongside with the growing setlist…
