Studiologic SL88 MK2

Does anyone here have the Studiologic SL88 MK2 and if so how well is it working for you with GP ?

Thanks!

If you search the forum, you’ll find many such users and topics.

Yes I’m aware of that. This is a new version of that controller and I was curious if any one on this forum happen to have this version as I’ve heard some complaints about it

I bought two of them. Both new version mkII.

SL88 GT (home main controller) and SL73 (live controller for piano sounds). I am very happy with both of them about keybed, weight, embedded audio board. Everything runs extremely well, I could not ask for more.

Except one thing: in midi mode no device is mapped, no control change from buttons and potentiometers. I use Mixface for that in live setups but those 4 transport buttons would be been perfect for an easy “one piece" system.

I think we should ask Studiologic to open their SL mode, they use it to drive their app but in hands of our programmers we could have a full GigPerformer integration. I promised to ask them but I didn’t do yet.

Thanks for that info! They have it working for Camelot so I can’t see why they wouldn’t for GP

True. But we have to push. Camelot is from an Italian company that has some links with Studiologic.

Anyway, I am Italian too and will try to convince them. I hope that they will consider some open approach as an opportunity for their sales.

I do not think that is easy for them because Camelot does not have similar to widgets.
They have channel based layout and the controls are for sure defined fix internally.

In my original plan, I would ask them to open the interface. It is said to be a software API thing in C language. Then here there are guys able to code something.

We can accept a link with hardware midi tracking and some display command. It would make the controller precious.

I wrote to Studiologic. Let’s see what they answer…. I mentioned that GigPerformer has a worldwide user base.

From what I read on their website it sounds like they’re interested in having the SLmk2 work with other apps besides their Numa Player and Camelot

I really hope so. Let’s see. Until now, no answer

I didn’t check yet, maybe their MIDI implementation document is publically available?

Usually controllers like this can be programmed using sysex messages.

Not publicized, but not very well hidden under the Fatar github user ID. fatarsrl/sl-link (Fatar is the parent company of the StudioLogic brand.)

It’s an interesting approach. Definitely non-trivial to interact with, but not excessively complicated either.

Wow…. You found the repository of all technical documents. We only need someone able and willing to produce the extension.

I would be ready to pay a sum to the programmer. I don’t write code since 40 years…

Any chance to find a documentation about the S88 Mk3?

From what I’ve seen, if you want to use the pretty screens and full functionality on a Native Instruments keyboard it is a very involved process compared to just sending midi. It’s been a few years since I’ve looked into it, but when I did I concluded that the Native Instruments goals and my own were not compatible.

From what I recall you have to build a full NKS file. The NKS file contains all your graphics, how you want the menus to work, all the parameters, etc. Basically if you want it to be usable and attractive the NKS, which will be loaded and run inside the keyboard, has to already know everything it’s going to display and any layers of menus to get you to each thing.

If you want to add a knob or use a different Rackspace then you have to build a new NKS.

Here’s a link to some of the NKS documentation.

Maybe I am wrong. But here we were talking about chance to use SL link for Studiologic controllers and GigPerformer. I don’t think NKS is involved. NKS is something used by Native Instruments environment. And it is more devoted to preset listing and assigned potentiometers.

I was trying to get full interface from Studiologic mkIII controllers which means 4 pushbuttons, 4 potentiometers and a screen display.

Yes it went off topic when NKS was mentioned . I’ll be getting the Studiologic SL88 Mk3 in a few days so I’m definitely interested in seeing what can be done with it and GP

Mk2 I meant

I just sent an email to Studiologic concerning their providing the info necessary. Will let you know they say
