Stuck Notes with Native Instruments Massive X

I have a weird issue with Massive X which does not happen with any of my other plugins: Notes will often get stuck if I disable the Midi In block that feeds Massive X while the notes are still being held, or if the sustain pedal is down. It happens about 50% of the time. I have confirmed this with a brand new Gig file with nothing in it but one instance of Massive X and one Midi In block. Even stranger - if I click the Midi panic button in Gig Performer, it does not stop the hung notes. The only simple way to stop them is to change the preset in Massive X.

Any idea why this would happen with this one plugin only? I would think that the Midi In block is simply turning off any notes and turning off the sustain pedal when it is disabled, so I don’t see how a bug in the plugin could cause this.

If you place a MIDI Monitor between your MIDI In block and your Massive X block, you should see that All Notes Off gets sent to all channels as soon as you disable the MIDI In block.

I don’t know for sure but I think Massive X doesn’t respond to All Notes Off

That’s a plugin bug

You’re right—a quick search revealed this issue occurring with Massive X in multiple DAWs as well. Definitely a plugin issue.

Thanks, guys - makes sense. What a shame, as this is a great sounding synth. I will notify NI.

Don’t do that! :grimacing:

You should rather block Notes On within the MIDI In block instead of the block itself.

Really? I thought the best practice was to map a widget to bypass a midi in block feeding an instrument. That way, you can disable midi to that instrument for variations that don’t use it. This is what I always do, and have never had an issue with it other than with Massive X.

Can you explain why blocking Note On is better?

Because it will allow existing sounds to continue until you release the keys but it doesn’t allow new notes to be played. Bypassing the plugin will stop all sounds immediately which is fine if that’s what you want)

Thanks, David. I just discovered that after playing around with this idea. Thanks for the great tip, David-san!

Tom

You are welcome

But unfortunately, many plugins go on sounding (e.g. remaining fx tails) when unbypassed again. This is one of the reasons why I suggested the Scriptlet Plugin Persist 2, which lets the sound fade out before bypassing the plugin.
