No Sound - Yamaha Montage m8x ESP

Ok, so this one has me baffled. I’ve downloaded and installed the new Yamaha Montage m8x E.S.P (v3.0) software and Gig Performer recognizes it no problem. The issue I am having is that I can’t get any sound to be produced. When I open the midi block and press notes on the virtual keyboard, I get nothing. Anyone else run into this issue and have any solutions? I’m running this on MacOS and am updated to the most recent version (updated to most recent version of GP as well). TIA for any help.

Is there a virtual keyboard within the plugin itself?

If so, what happens when you trigger that?(check full range of keyboard).

There are a lot of ways to figure out out happens to the signal.

Wrong midi channel is often a culprit with me.

What wires are lighting up (rackspace panel). You can check the midi monitor.

Anything bypassed.

Mixer channel muted? What is lighting up,?

Licensing is another issue to check.

Did you check in the plugin which MIDI channel for receiving is set?

Does the plugin work in other applications such as a DAW?

Hi Jeff. Thanks for the response. There is no keyboard within the plugin itself as far as I can tell. In the rackspace, no wires are lighting up but when I connect a different plugin using the same rack space/same wiring diagram that works and no wires light up. Given that any other plugin is working, I don’t think anything is being bypassed or there are issues with the mixer channel otherwise no plugins would work, right? Licensing seems ok from what I can tell as well

I don’t have any other DAWs to try it in.

Hi - I don’t have any other daws to try the plugin in.

Hi @pianopaul

The MIDI I/O Ch. on the plugin is set to Ch5. GP is set to only accept program change messages on channel 5 and MIDI Song select to PC and use MIDI channel = 5 as well. As mentioned in previous responses, I don’t have another DAW to run it in.

Interesting…most plugins use MIDI channel 1.

So to diagnose this issue you need to check a few things

  1. Open your global midi monitor, play a few notes on your controller and then upload a screenshot of the monitor contents so we can see it
  2. Open the MIDI in block that’s connected to your plugin. Upload a screen shot of that plugin so we can see the settings
  3. If you play some notes on your controller, do you see the virtual keyboard on the MIDI in block flashing?

I’m heading out to a dinner party so I’ll try to do this first thing tomorrow and send the screen shots.

I remember when I bought the first generation Montage it came with a cutdown version of Cubase and I would think they gave you a version of Cubase along with the plugin unless Yamaha’s getting cheap

I’m sure there’s no problem with the plugin - we need to just diagnose the issue - it’s most likely a user configuration problem

You could, if you wanted to, download the trial of Logic pro to try.

Have you tried the other Montage Midi ports in GP?

Let’s please just have him report the answers to the questions we have asked.

Here’s the screen shots you asked for.

To answer your question, yes, the wire on the midi block is flashing when I play some notes.

Good - but your MIDI notes are coming in on MIDI channel 2. Does the plugin respond to MIDI events on channel 2 or does it need them to be on channel 1 (a change you can quickly make in the MIDI In block)?

Maybe that’s it (?) Above the OP said the plugin was set to channel 5.

Yes, it does but I changed it to Channel 1 to test and it did not change anything

Originally it was but I’ve been playing around trying different channels to see if there might be an issue with one channel and that doesn’t appear to be the cause. I’ve set all channels to the same one and it’s made no difference in the issue.
