GP Glitching on MacBook Pro OS Catalina

Hello, I’m new to GP and have it installed on my 2012 MacBook Pro, 2,5GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, 16GB Ram, OS 10.15.7. I have it all going through a new M-Audio M-Track Duo interface.

So far all I’ve done is make a rig consisting of a Grandeur Piano in Kontakt. I can play it and get sounds happening, but when playing it glitches every few seconds, limiting the actual playability of the setup.

When I first installed GP I just had it using the onboard ‘sound card’ in MacBook and on discovering this glitching, thought it was probably due to the fact I wasn’t using a dedicated USB interface, so I bought the M-Audio yesterday, but nothing changed.

All suggestions for how to remedy this are greatly appreciated…

What audio settings are you using in gig performer?

Thanks for your reply Piano Paul…

This from the Audio I/O tab…
Audio In
Input Device - USB AUDIO CODEC
Active Input channels - Front Left / Front Right

Audio Out
…as above…

Audio Properties
Sample Rate - 44100 Hz
Audio Buffer size - 32 samples (0.7ms)

I have the Buffer set low as I assumed that like in a DAW, when ‘performing / recording’ etc it needs to be low, as opposed to when Mixing we set it to a higher value. Maybe I’m wrong in the case of GP?

I must say that if I open Logic Pro and load the same Kontakt Grandeur Piano it plays perfectly as expected.

32 is crazy low. It stresses your system. Try 128 or even 256, if you want even more headroom (if you are okay with it)(I use 256).

After a GP user on Facebook suggested changing buffer size this is the result…
I changed the buffer to 512 samples but I still notice a ‘wobble’ occasionally. Before buying GP I made sure that it would run on an older MacBoopk Pro os Catalina, which the specs claim it does, so, well, hopefully it can be sorted. I’d actually paid for Mainstage a few days before buying GP, but Mainstage won’t work on older Macs, and because I’d never bought MS previously (ie a prior version for Catalina) Apple won’t allow me to install the older version, which of course is available IF I’d bought it previously. Crazy crazy…

What value is shown in the audio cpu meter within gig performer?

Only 1% to 2% when playing Kontakt Piano

And you still get audio glitches?

Please post a screenshot of the audio settings and the cpu usage shown in gig performer

I’ll do that in an hour or so as I have to go out for a while. Thanks for your help…will get back to you soon.

This is a duplicate of what’s also on Facebook - please just use these community forums so that we don’t have to answer in two different places.

Thank you for your understanding.

Then something else is wrong - that is not enough to cause any issues with real-time audio. Are you using a audio interface with a decent driver? Can you post a screen shot of the audio settings as seen from the Gig Performer options?

Apple wants you to buy new hardware — but since we don’t have hardware to sell, GP is designed to work all the way back to macOS 10.9

Apologies for posting in FB and this forum. I didn’t realise they were one and the same.
Here’s the screenshot…

I would want to see what other options you have for input and output device. Is there an option that says “M audio”? (But I sort of shoot around in the dark. Listen to David and Paul before me).

They’re not the same but the community forums are the primary resource for tech support and although many people watch both, it’s a PITA to have to respond in both

Is USB Audio CODEC the M-AUDIO driver? Did you actually have to install a driver to use that interface?

Your CPU for audio is only 2-3% as you noted - that means that there is no issue with GP or the plugin not having enough CPU cycles — something else is going on here.

Are you running other programs at the same time as GP?

@dhj @jeffn1 - I know what your saying, as I also expected that it would show as “M audio” but not so…The M-Audio M-Track Duo install guide states it will show as “USB Audio Codec”, which is what it shows in menu. I also have an M-Audio Air 192|14 which I use for general DAW work on my MacBook Air M3, and it does show as “Air 192”.
I’m not really running any other programs on the older MBP with GP.
The reason I’m wanting to setup on the ollder MBP is that it’s a rea;ly sturdy build physically, and I’d rather use that for lugging to jams/gigs etc, instead of the somewhat frail MacBook Air, even though the MBAir is current and can also run Mainstage. I just wanted to make use of the good old work horse.

I don’t know if this will be helpful, but I read this on the Apple Community forum:

First, the designation USB AUDIO CODEC does not refer to drivers. This is a generic tagging for, usually older, USB audio devices where the Mac is not able to pull the name from the device.

*On the Mac where the interface is working as expected, is that device also running El Capitan. *

Some users on other forums have reported success with this particular audio interface and El Capitan by creating an aggregate device using the Audio MIDI Setup app.

Is an actual dedicated driver for the interface installed?

@edm11 - The MacBook Air, which is my DAW host and completely independant of the MBP running GP, is running OS Sonoma with the M-Audio Air 192|14 interface. As for your comment Some users on other forums have reported success with this particular audio interface and El Capitan by creating an aggregate device using the Audio MIDI Setup app. - I have absolutely no idea about that or how to do it.
@dhj M-Audio require no drivers on a Mac; they state that in their documentation.
