So the first time I have opened GP today I got a crash. I have GP set up that it starts with an empty Gig File. I have not activated the option to start with last Gig File. So here is the crash report. I have no idea what has caused the crash this time. One question: Does GP need an internet connection in order to start or is this not necassary? I am asking because sometimes my computer needs some time untill he is connected to the internet…
crash.zip (15.2 KB)
the next crash…
crash 2.zip (15.2 KB)
Gig Performer itself does not need an active Internet connection.
But some plugins want to talk home.
And when they find a IP connection (the router is available) but Internet is not reachable, this could be an issue.
When did the crashes occur?
What do says the crash report? I don’t understand it. I have immediately posted the crash reports when the crashs occurred. Or what do you mean with “when”?
Did you load a gig file and before loading was finished the crash occurred?
No. I just started GP with the setting as mentioned that GP starts with an empty Gig File. Just as a sidenote I would suggest not moving my crash problems around in the forum because sometimes it is Falcon, sometimes it is Amplitude. Sometimes an empty Gig File crashes. I don’t know if it makes sense to make a new thread of all those crashes.
OK, and as soon as you started you got the crash?
Did you set the option “Scan for new/changed plugins on startup” in the general options?
When you “moved” to a new computer - did you create a new settings file for GP or did you just copy the old one?
Can you please zip and upload your GP Settings file?
Ok, tomorrow. I did. Not make a new settings file.
Scan for new plugins is always activated
Yes, I started an got the crash
If you just copied the old one, that could absolutely be an issue
Delete the settings file and start again as if you were a new user
Does the manual warn you about that? I didn’t know that. Where is the settings file on a Mac? I migrated my whole system from an iMac to a MacBook Pro based on a Time Machine Backup. This migration went apart from some minor issues pretty well. I got no problems with Logic Pro or other Music Software. Only Gig Performer is crashing all the time, but that was already the case on my old system.
What should it be warning about? I don’t know if this is the issue - I’m trying to help figure out what’s wrong with your system. Personally, I don’t trust migration and I certainly wouldn’t trust a migration from an Intel machine to an Apple Silicon machine.
What’s your point? Logic Pro is Apple’s software - and they already do some nasty hacks to make sure that their software will work.
We asked you a long time ago about this and it’s my understanding that your old system was running fine so now I’m a bit confused. So are you now telling us that Gig Performer never worked properly for you and was always crashing?
Just to clarify. First the migration was from a Silicon Desktop Mac to a Silicon MacBook. Second I just said that my other Music Software including for example Logic is just running fine on my new hardware. Third: On the old system there have been crashes also, not always crashing, but sometimes. For example caused by Falcon. I don’t want to offend anybody. I am just saying that GP is crashing all the time, while my other software whether music or whatever other software is just working fine. This is just an observation.
OK - unfortunately, that doesn’t actually mean much.
Nobody is offended – seriously — I repeat — nobody is offended
Just trying to understand what’s going on.
Also understood - but the problem is that it is crashing only for you all the time and that suggests (doesn’t prove) that the problem is more likely to be related to your particular system. That’s why I’d like to start by your deleting the settings file and starting as if it was the first time for GP.
The settings file should be in
~/Library/Application Support/GigPerformer/Gig Performer.settings
Just delete that file (with Gig Performer NOT running) and then start GP again - it will want to scan all your plugins again.
Ok, here is the old settings file that I have removed now. Maybe this delivers some insights. I don’t know…
Gig Performer.settings.zip (44.3 KB)
At the same location I have also found a document “recently crahshed plugins”, but ironically it is empty. So I wonder what means “recently” in this case.
Ok….after removing that file, did you run GP again and did it start scanning all your plugins?
Yes. Tomrrow I wil have more time. And who knows… Maybe we have tamed the beast now…
In the last two hours I have been playing with something like 10 Gig Files and until now no crashes anymore. So now it seems that more than everything else (Falcon etc.) the settings file was the “bad guy”. Thank you very much.
