[blog] Be careful with updates

Yeah, sure… nothing is perfect.
My concerns are not just based on faulty updates.

M4L API in Ableton Live 12.3

The new version of Ableton Live 12.3 has a big issue in the M4L API.
The issue was reported to the Ableton support and after some test case they have been able to reproduce the issue.

There is a new public beta version available and the issue has been fixed in this beta version.

The January, 2026, Windows 11 update (KB5074109) has been reported to cause various system and application stability issues across builds 26200.7623 (25H2) and 26100.7623 (24H2). Microsoft has acknowledged several of these bugs and, in some cases, recommended uninstalling the update until a permanent fix is released.

Reported Issues

  • Outlook Classic Failures: Users with POP/SMTP accounts report Outlook hanging, showing “Not Responding,” or failing to open unless the process is killed in Task Manager. This is reportedly linked to conflicts with OneDrive-synced PST files.
  • Black Screen Episodes: Systems with both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs have experienced brief (1–2 second) black screens where the desktop freezes before returning to normal.
  • Desktop Background Resets: The update may reset custom wallpapers or Spotlight backgrounds to a solid black screen.
  • Remote Desktop & Authentication: Enterprise users have faced credential prompt failures and sign-in errors (e.g., 0x80080005) when using Azure Virtual Desktop or Windows 365.
  • File Explorer Bugs: The update reportedly breaks the LocalizedResourceName directive in desktop.ini, causing customized folder names to revert to their default system names.
  • Sleep Mode Issues: Some older systems using S3 sleep states have reported that the device can no longer enter sleep mode properly.

“I thought it’s no problem”

One just does not know the impact of a change and when you depend on a system, changing it in any way no matter how innocuous can cause grief.

Nothing (no software, no hardware, no cables) should be changed unless there is plenty of time to deal with unexpected issues.

Update Warning: Korg Triton Plugin v1.4.3

.

If you select a Combination preset, save the project in your DAW, and then reload it, the Combination no longer sounds the same as before.

Example: “BeeG Pad2 Bright” — the sounds are (among other things) detuned within themselves.

Tested with VST2 and VST3 in Gig Performer and Cubase.

Korg posted a notice this month (March) to no longer use their USB driver.

Microsoft has been rolling out updates to MIDI services and MIDI 2.0 support. The Korg driver has compatibility issues and will not work although the device will be listed. MIDI endpoint registration and enumeration is different.
