Anyone successfully using the same gig for both Windows and Mac?

Hey GP-mates,

I would like to make my Mac machine a backup machine for my Windows live machine.
So, I need to maintain a single gig file for both Mac and Windows.

My requirement is to automatically sync the same gig file with one copy, without any need to do further modifications or manipulations.

Anyone here already use both Mac and Windows for the same gig file?

For what I know, here are the differences I can think of:

  1. Rig manager is my friend for assigning hardware that has different port names between Mac and Windows.

  2. AU is mac only, so use only VST3 or VST.

  3. Must install the same set of plugins at both machines.

  4. Plugins (e.g. samplers) that reference local files on disk will not work, as paths are not compatible between Mac and Windows.

Regarding issue #4, it can be resolved by probably using plugins that load the whole sample files into their state and so they will not access local files. Not ideal but as my samples are all of a small size then it will not blow the gig file size too much.

Are there samplers that do know to handle cross-platform paths?

Can you recommend sampler plugins that stores the sample files in their state?

Thanks,
Dadi

Take a look at BLISS

Thanks, will check.

I know that Vital saves the samples inside the state, but I could not find a way to modify the start time of the sample. It always plays few ms delayed when triggered.

What is Vital?

A fantastic free synth, many put it on the league of Pigments and Serum. Google it.

I use the same gig file on several Macs of varying OS’s (all pre 11.x) and a windows machine. The only thing I have trouble with is the streaming audio player on the Win10 machine, the GP Audio path doesn’t resolve as I expected. There are a few effects VST’s I have not loaded on the Win10 machine, but these get bypassed allowing the signal through, so it is fine for what I need.

The only reason I use the Win10 machine is for script development.and testing. It is purely a convenience thing, as I can use my development tools, editors, git etc. and sit in front of the TV.

But you have this: How to handle Streaming Audio File Player audio tracks between multiple computers?

Or, if you used this – was this feature not working as expected?

The problem is third party plugins that hardcode their location for where they expect to find samples

I think I am setting the location of the audio folder. When I am on windows I am usually testing scripts. I will make a point of checking why the streaming players don’t seem to move from my Macs to my Windows machine.

I found that both Serum and TX16Wx supports embedding the audio file in their state and so they are not looking for the files on local disk.

Currently I’ll go with TX16Wx which is both simple (only after watching a short video tutorial) and powerful, also it takes very low CPU when playing (it is also free  ).
