I have a 1TB ssd for my Windows 10 (C: drive), which I have made a clone of if things go wrong. I likely shoud have a 3rd drive for differential backups, but have not done that so far. I have been trying to free up space on it, as it is at 92gb. I was thinking about getting a 2Tb drive, to get rid of the sluggeshness, but then I would not have a 2nd drive for backup, exceeding the 1Tb. So much software and so much time to ween off the extra space on my pc. What would you do, Your opinions?
If you have sluggishness from the hard drive, it is either to slow on throughput or it needs to be optimized.
I would probably start compressing some folders first. You should also be able to get compressed backups onto a drive of the same size.
Beyond that, it may be about time to consider a new machine with lots of fast RAM and the fastest hard drive available. Unless you dedicate and air gap that machine, it will become more vulerable to attack as time goes on without Microsoft patches.
I have a NAS with 10 TB RAID protected storage for my backups. Haven’t had to worry about too little backup space and should be good for a few more years when I will just add drives to the NAS.
What’s your budget? Your internal drive should be a fast SSD, as big as possible but your backup can be a slow 4TB device (there are many and so not expensive these day)
Thanks David. I almost forgot about an HP ProDesk 600 I bought with intension of migrating everything to (huge task) but it has way better specs. Instead of an my Dell it has an i7 in it, and I put 32gb of ram in it. It already had the Windows Pro loaded instead of the Win10 HOME (big advantage, of course it will likely be a problem at the end of this year and I will have to update it to version 11 (which adds more software issues for me. BOY I wish I had just spent the money to get a mac eons ago. It uses the M1 ram and I have more ports than my Dell. Time to just put it to use, one way or another. Talk to you next year…… lol
