Using GP as Midi Clock Master

Is it possible to sync external gear from GP? I didn’t find anything in the forum about that. Just how to sync GP from external, which is principally working okay.

If I connect sequencers to my GP Midi out, they don’t react to the clock or transport control of GP. But if I connect another MIDI clock source (Elektron stuff) to the same device, it works.

Any ideas?

Can you use Ableton Link?

I don’t use Ableton. I want to sync an external hardware sequencer and provide a click to a drummer.

Did you enable the check box in the rackspace properties?

There are 2 checkboxes. One is to enable the sync receive mode (what I don’t want).
The other one is to set a predefined Tempo when loading the rackspace. This one works internally. But the clock is not sent to the Midi outputs. I didn’t find an Option to activate that.

I fear gig performer does not send out clock.
But maybe a workaround could help.
How can your hardware sequencer be started by midi?
I think of this:
Start the hardware sequencer from gig performer by sending some midi messages and send clock back to gig performer from your hardware sequencer.

Thank you Paul. But in this case I can start the sequencer manually. The charming feature would have been that I could store tempo with my rackspaces.
And I was hoping that I could provide click to my drummer that way, even if the sequencer is not running.

@pianopaul mentioned Ableton Link. This is a new technology used in many applications. It is not limited to Ableton Live.

Many smaller apps - even for phones and tablets support Ableton Link and can sync up the clock that way. If your drummer had such an app and is connected to the same WiFi - he could be getting the tempo from you.

Another option is to route the GP’s metronome to certain audio channels that can then be fed to people who need the click.

I do not know if it works, but you can try:

Maybe Reaktor of NI can generate Midi Clock:

Many thanks for all your ideas. I will try Reaktor. Maybe that helps.

Another problem with my looper is, that it runs out of sync after a while when I sync GP from my Elektron. So I Hope That this works better when I sync from the host.

Another question. Do you know if I can send a Midi command message with Tempo information from a script? I thought about letting sending the tempo of a Rackspace to my Sequencer, even if the clock comes from the Sequencer later on.

Btw. Happy New Year!

You can send sysex messages from GP script
Maybe that helps

I have included a fairy full description of a Pure Data script and how to get it running to allow GP to be a master clock for hardware synths. There are many improvements that could be made, but this is a first cut. I have added it to Tips and Tricks so it doesn’t get lost.
