Using Gig Performer with a DAW

Hi,
I use Digital Performer, Mac Sierra. I will not be playing anything live. I will be recording in my DAW (Digital Performer… DP). I am getting the hint that Gig Performer is not a plugin; but is a stand alone program. Is this right ?
I have a 8-channel output converter. Is the correct thing for me to do is to send out several stereo outputs to several Gig Performers and then run the Gig’s outputs back into my DAW’s inputs? I want to change rack spaces and variations using DP’s automation.

Am I on the right track or is there a simpler way (I hope.)

Thank you,
Terry

Hi Terry, I am using GigPerformer and Ableton Live on Stage.

Changing Rackspaces is simple, just send a program change message from a clip via IAC Driver to GigPerformer.
Or in (Ableton Live) use a M4L Patch to send an OSC message to GigPerformer.

You can use Soundflower or better Loopback to send GigPerfomers output back to your DAW, but there is some latency.
So just adjust sending midi notes from your daw to GigPerformer.

Hi PianoPaul,
I looked up LoopBack - they want you to write code. No thank you.

I already have soundflower installed in my DAW (Digital Performer). Let’s use that.

When I go to make an output for a fresh Midi track (to send OSC messages to GigPerformer) the AIC Driver is in Italics and indicates (missing). I have never used AIC; but it is in my Audio MIDI Setup.

Thanks for your help. :>)

Hi Terry,

I am using Loopback, what do you mean “They want you to write code”?

Yo must have found the wrong Loopback.

Loopback is an application from Rogue Amoeba. They, incidentally, had taken over maintenance of SoundCloud from Cycling74. Loopback is far superior to soundcloud and trivial to set up. While there are various different ways to use it, I just have it configured to create a 4-channel virtual audio interface which I then aggregate with my 16-channel RME interface. Gig Performer sees an audio interface that has 20 channels and I can just run other apps to transfer audio between those apps and Gig Performer.

Hi PianoPaul,
I got Loopback going. It is called Instant On Sound Effects.
In GigPerformer (GP), I got Instant On Sound Effects as my audio out.
In my DAW (Digital Performer), Instant On Sound Effects shows up as an option for input and output; but in Loopback under options for audio IN, there is no Instant On Sound Effects. So I chose Soundflower instead. My only other choices are hardware interfaces which I am avoiding because I want direct internal computer access instead of using wires.

So the GP is sending out audio on Instant On Sound Effects. In my DAW I made a stereo track to record into; but for input there is no Instant On Sound Effects available. So how am I supposed to Loopback with Instant On Sound Effects?

I also have a question about OSC. In the global Midi Options window, there is a switch to go up and a switch to go down. Does this mean that when changing variations the presets have to be in order ahead of time?

Terry, I’ll let PianoPaul answer your Loopback question as I’m not quite sure what you’re trying to do there, nor why Soundflower would even be getting used (Loopback would be a 100% replacement for Soundflower, not something to use with soundflower)

Regarding your other question, first of all OSC has nothing to do with global MIDI Options. The Up/Down option is intended to just give you the ability to move up or down, one variation at a time (optionally allowing you to also move to the next or previous rackspace). Generally people who use that mechanism would normally try to put variations (and indeed rackspaces) in order so as to get from one to the next as quickly as possible. If you want to go to an arbitrary variation, then you will need to associate program changes with the variations and send program change MIDI messages instead

Hi PianoPaul,
After a couple of hours, Loopback showed up in my DAW. That Instant On Sound Effects was a totally different thing which never showed up until I downloaded Loopback. This computer is being messed with in the spirit realm.

Loopback didn’t even show up in GP until now. So now I have Loopback as input and output.

In my DAW I have a midi track with the out put set to IAC; but it won’t let me record into it because the window says there would be a loop. Is there a place I am supposed to set the IAC to go to GP?

Sorry for the confusion…
Terry

Terry, it’s been a while since I used Digital Performer but if I recall, unless you turn on multi-track MIDI recording, through which you can control specifically which MIDI inputs you want to use, then Digital Performer will just record ANY incoming MIDI. So yeah, if you set an IAC port as an output in Digital Performer and you don’t have multi-track MIDI enabled, you’ll get a loop.

Thanks for helping out. As you can tell by reading my last post, my computer was not registering loopback right until two hours after download. So it wasn’t showing up in GigPerf or my DAW (Digital Performer). (and something else showed up/ sound effects- which I thought was loopback)

I also agree with you that midi messages are the way to go. In the global Midi option window, it shows devices that can transmit program changes; but I want to record the changes in a midi track and just play the track which will automatically send the messages to GigPerf.

Here’s what I tried:
I set up my keyboard (Alesis Q49) as a midi output in a midi track. (I won’t be playing live.) I can insert 128 different patch changes. How do I know which patch change goes to which Gigperf Variation?

Thanks.
Terry

You can double-click on a variation to open a dialog where you can just set whatever program change number you want to use. Alternatively, there’s a menu option you can use to assign program changes automatically ascending. Whatever works for you. Note that we display program changes as 1-128 but in Digital Performer you may need to insert your program changes using the range 0-127

Hi David,
I got two variations of one rackspace set up with loopback in and out.
I have one midi track with program changes written. Patch 1 and patch 2
Loopback is not available in the output of the midi track. Only the LaunchControl and the midi keyboard (Q49).
When I set GigPer Midi, it only allowed the LaunchControl and the midi keyboard (Q49).
How do I set up the DAW to send MIDI program changes?
Thanks for your help.
Terry

Terry, I do not really understand your DAW, but I can show you what I did with GigPerformer and Ableton live.
Just take a look at the attached screenshots, maybe that helps.

Now the screenshots

Corrected screenshot.

Loopback is audio only. You’ll never see midi there. As for how to send MIDI from your DAW, you’ll need to refer to the DP documentation or contact MOTU. If you send program changes into GIg Performer from DP then you’ll want to configure an IAC port and tell GP to accept changes on that port

Hi,
Let’s have a drink ! I got IAC working like a charm.
Praise Jesus !
Thanks a lot, guys. The confusing part is:
Yes, you use a MIDI track to load your patch changes; then you set the output to a AIC driver.
So you are doing BOTH - Midi and AIC.
Terry

Just to be clear…you should think of an IAC port as if it were a MIDI cable inside your computer allowing one application to send MIDI events to another application.
