Hey, I started with GP5 and don’t know how I can utilize Abletons buit-in instruments which can be hosted only in Ableton Live together with 3rd party plugins hosted in GP5.
Since I also use Ableset for Song control and live looping with Ableton for both Guitar and Keyboard I am really open for advice for a future-proof setup.
My current setup so far:
all Plugins hosted in Ableton live
Ableset is applied as Setlist Manager, using Multi File option (1 Song per Live Set), changing Ableton Live Sets per song via midi controller
Within all Live sets, Keyboard and Guitar audio as well as Midi Keyboard Input (using Instrument rack) is used
All Live Sets contain arranged looping using Ableton looper device for Guitar and Keyboard inputs
Automated preset switching (Within Live and external Keyboard / Guitar Fx via Midi out)
Playback Tracks are included in every Live set (e.g. in case a Band member is not available)
My future intention:
Use Ableton Live as a master for Song, including arranged looping & backing tracks, avoid external VST hosts to keep loading time of live sets short
Use GP5 as main host for Keyboard (Audio Input) and VST Plugins + Ableton Instruments
Use GP5 as main host for Guitar (Audio Input of Multi-Effect & Raw Input Signal + Plugin (T-HU))
Use GP5 as main interface to Control all Sounds and display e.g. looper states
Keep Ableset as Controller for Live Set / Song & section control
→ can this work or am I on the wrong way?
My concerns:
How to streamline control - automated switching of presets for Sounds
How to ensure robustness e.g. if for every song a different Live-Set is used, no manual setup should be required. I tried keeping all in one Live Set but stopped this as it gets worse to maintain with every new song.
How to switch Rack spaces based on Ableton and Ableset. Within Ableset, the Setlist / Song order can change which should be reflected by the GP Rackspace. Maybe there is a plugin to name the Rackspace within Ableton directly, so Ableton can control the Sounds?
Really don’t understand what you’re trying to do, sounds extremely complicated
I don’t think you’re going to get Ableton to release their plugins as regular VSTs — most plugins that come with DAWs are proprietary to their respective DAWs and there’s no incentive to change that.
If you’re running both platforms together, then you can use OSC messages to control one from the other.
I think the easiest way to go about it in my opinion is to use GP as your setlist and song part manager and use the song parts to send midi messages to Ableset which in turn change your Ableton Live set. GP is just so flexible and powerful I just think it makes for sense for GP to handle the setlist part of things.
Also in my personal opinion you should probably give up the Ableton plugins and look for 3rd party replacements that you can use in GP. Technically there are ways you can still use the Ableton ones but that comes with complications that are better resolved by just using 3rd party VST’s.
Hello, basically I do all with Ableton and Ableset right now but I wanted to decouple the VST usage from the live set to speed up the song changes and maybe have better display options and OSC support with GP.
My main concern right now is how I can do the synchronized preset changing in GP according to Lives Arrangement view. If I load a new live set, on loading the right preset should be selected and also during playing there should be possibility for automation.
I will try first with simple program change from Ableton, I think the M4L device of pianopaul may be not fitting for my purpose or I coud somehow figure out an adaption for Arrangement view.
Send program changes from Ableton to GP rackspaces, variations or song parts. without the need for max4live.
Enable the IAC driver for this to work.
If you are on windows use an equivalent virtual midi port.
Works flawlessly.
GP is better at managing ram and resources than Ableton.
So your intention is correct.
