Sync MIDI tempo to incoming MIDI data stream

Hi,
I’m looking to find a way to control MIDI tempo with a real-time MIDI data stream or audio. The goal is to trigger sequenced phrases in tempo, synced with the live tempo rather than a predefined one.
My current thinking is that this processes MIDI (or audio) input and controls the tempo/clock such that I can trigger phrase-based fills without worrying that the preset tempo value isn’t what the drummer is currently playing. The ultimate goal is to be able to trigger phrase-based sequences and have them be in time with the drummer (and the band).
Thanks,
Andy

With MIDI Clock enabled the tempo should by synchronized.

It sounds like you could use GP’s tap tempo feature to align with the drummer, and then trigger your sequences.

The only solution I know which seems to work more or less is the Ableton Live 11 Tempo Follower option:

Tell the drummer he should use a metronome or give him a click track

I played quite a few arpeggiated and pulse based phrases with our band and the approach we have taken is to set the initial tempo as close as possible to the normal live tempo when performing the song (and sometimes I’ll add 1 or occasionally 2 BPM to this value as retriggers are less jarring when they are late rather than early) and then I retrigger the sequenced/arpeggiated phrases every one or two bars to correct any drift. This does require your drummer to be pretty consistent tempo-wise, and I realise not every drummer is, but if yours is, this is a workable technique.

I follow a similar approach using a tap tempo pedal to catch the tempo and then I re-trigger the arpeggiator at each new chord.

A tap tempo pedal… there’s an idea!
