The Global Rackspace does not have variations.
my point exactly
Sorry, I don’t understand your point.
Edit: Oh, perhaps it was the way you phrased it.
I interpreted “I’d lose the Variations in the Global Rackspace” to mean that you wouldn’t be able to use variations IN the rackspace but I think you meant that you would lose the ability to use variations because the Global Rackspace doesn’t support them.
If that’s the case, I don’t understand the problem - why can’t you just use variations in individual rackspaces?
Sorry for being unclear. Let me try to 'splain:
I have 5 amp sims that I only use one at a time. But they eat up a chunk of CPU even when bypassed, so I was thinking of ways to isolate them. The idea of Rackspaces makes sense, since they can be swapped in/out easily and connect to a Global 'space for always-available effects.
I’ve already got it all dialed in pretty well in one big Uber-rackspace, so ripping it up and shuffling the parts around will be annoying. Especially in the scripts, I’m not even sure how that’d work; I’d need a separate script for each rackspace, to control that rackspace’s amp sim, right?
The other caveat I was coming up with is that with all of the effects in the Global space, I would not have the luxury of Variations for various preset effect configurations.
I don’t use Variations currently, as I focus on improvised live performance, but it’s an enhancement I’ve thought of. Specifically, leaving the completely wide-open pedalboard flexibility as exists, but also finding a few unique settings that I would like to be able to recall and continue to dial in: a gritty octave sound I like, for example, or a big delayed reverby pitch whale sound. To be honest, the idea comes from Trey Anastasio’s board: I don’t know every detail, but the way I understand it, he can choose any effect at any time, and also has preset sounds he returns to/leans on: “JEDI”, “DEEP”, “REVERSE”, etc. That’s what I’m going for.
The biggest offender, surprisingly, is not the NeuralDSP products - although they are not lightweight - it’s the MLC S_Zero 100 that is the hog. With the “ultra-quality” mode turned on - it’s a significant difference, why is it even a choice - it is a monster.
I realized I had it in Stero mode, and when I switched to Mono, it was more reasonable - so much so that I don’t think it’s worth the effort to re-design everything. On my decade-old MacBook Pro, I’m at about 52% with almost all effects and the MLC enabled. It could be lower, but it’s acceptable.
The NeuralDSPs differ from product to product; the Rabea sim shows CPU at 37%, while the Wong jumps to 50%. The Soldano, Nameless, and Gojira are all in that range. The lowest (lightest) one I have is the Softube Marshall Plexi Classic, at 32%.
In any event, I think I’ll start playing with Variations now, instead of redesigning the whole thing right now. (For now.)
You are aware of the ability to control widgets in a global rackspace from a local rackspace?
That is interesting… I didn’t know specifically about that. It would add a layer of links that could become cumbersome to maintain, perhaps. Are you suggesting that Variations in a regular Rackspace can be used to control changes in the Global rackspace?
Yes, this feature allows you to do this.
