Saxophia plugin on macOS

I found a sax plug called Saxophia - I don’t know how to load it
1 - I have a VST folder but its in my applications folder - should I move this under documents (I have a Mac()
2 - I unzip it and it’s in VST3 64 with a dll. file - It doesn’t show when I scan
3 - I have some other plug ins (Korg etc) which don’t load as well.

finally what format should I use - it seems that VST3 doesn’t have all the latest sounds and someone said you shouldn’t combine formats in a gig file.

Is the folder location added to the GP plugin manager?
Is the plugin failing and shows red in the plugin manager or it does not show at all?

I would say vst3 works best in GP.
I don’t think it will cause problems when mixing plugin types. But recommended to use vst3 whenever possible.

A few folder are loaded - for proper file management in a Mac - where would you store all your plug ins? (Arturia automatically makes a folder for theirs under Audio/library/ etc.

I have a few that are red - but I can’t see the Saxophia one:

Make sure to add the folder location where the saxophia vst is - to the plugin manager.
That’s the issue if GP does not detect it at least failing (red).
Then click rescan plugins - it will rescan all plugins in those folder locations.
By default GP catches most of those locations but sometimes we have to add them manually if they are not in one of the common locations.

In your displayed folder locations I don’t see any folders for vst3 and/or AU if you use these types on Mac. I would guess that is the issue.

DLL files are for Windows, not Mac

Remove /Applications/VST

On a Mac, plugins will always be under the first (almost always) or second (occasionally)locatins

As far as I can see, they have no macOS installer, just the Windows installer.

i saw that too - do you need a mac installer to use it on a mac? couldnt you just drop the vst files in a folder?

if they are vsts probably you can. but as @dhj was saying, dll files are for windows so they won’t work with mac.
either vst or vst3 files will work.

How can macOS know what is a Windows library (DLL). On macOS libraries are DYLIB.

Therefore, if you are looking for a VST (without the installer), make sure it is built for macOS.

Example: Nick Crow Lab

You can see that there are builds for Windows and macOS for this VST.

I was under the impression that a vst is a vst no matter what computer you use no? I get that the installer isn’t useable - but are you saying that if I copy the vst files into the right folder it won’t work because its a Mac?

Yes, VST format in DLL won’t work on a Mac.
