Maybe (but of course @Aladin can better answer this) he/she is using the layout on the screen to tell him/her wat the buttons on the controller represent and that the function of the buttons (and the descriptions on the screen) might be quite different between the rackspaces?
I had kind of the same problem: I used a controller for selecting drumpatches and loops real-time. But sometimes the intro was using button 3 for a song, while another song had the loops for a bridge associated with that same button. Of course it is bad management but it still drove me crazy. I solved it by buying a touchscreen and using a gig that displays for each song the right partname (and loop) for each button. So I abandoned the hardware controller.
