Rackspace - Audio Mixer or VI host automation level

A few minutes ago, I just activated my GP2. I am excited to learn.

I play in a cover band. I create a rackspace for every song we play. In each rackspace I have at least two virtual instruments.

My questions are:
(1) Is it more efficient to contol the plugin’s volume through host automation or using the Audio Mixer (8ch)?

(2) Which is better option, VST or AU version? I am on a MacBook Pro.

Thanks,
Eli

  1. You can use either one of those or even just use the Gain control if you don’t need the mixer. It is important to do proper gain staging. This also depends on what kind of plugin you use. If you use a guitar amp - it will behave differently if you change it’s gain vs volume/master. The sound will be different so just make sure you are doing it at the proper stage and listen to how things sound.

  2. There should be no difference in either using VST, VST2 or AU of the same plugin. Some plugins may have different parameter behaviour, but all should sound the same and consume the same resources.

Thanks Nebojsa. I am used to Mainstage’s mixer. I might just utilized the 8ch mixer as I only use keyboard patches.
