Possibly switching from Hardware to Gig performer but I have a few questions

Hello,

I’ve been a keyboard guy using, Yamaha arrangers, (not the arranger features ) for decades, currently with the Genos 2.

Before I ditch the hardware route, I wanted to start to see if I can mimic some of my uses of the Genos 2, with Gig performer.

  1. I need the ability to call up a song or medley, and have access to up to 10 programmed patches/layers/splits, while playing during medleys

  2. Ability to also have 1 shot samples ready to go depending on the songs

  3. Sometimes also playing backing tracks

I purchased Gig performer, but was wondering is there a VST that is free or cheap, that I can use to quickly try my scenario’s out?

I will be getting a RME UC interface to handle the heavy lifting

Thanks in advance

2 is easy, I do it all the time.

3 should be easy using the streaming audio player

1 should be easy too. If you always do this in a predetermined order, just use setlist mode and use song and song parts. Simple.

If things are more improvised and you are jumping around spontaneously (not planned before), a lot of people do this. If you follow a predetermined order, you can just go back and forth to the next song or medley. But, if it is not predetermined, you might need to set up buttons on a controller and use program changes to go where you want.(There are threads on this topic in this forum. Maybe search “song finder” in the forum).

I suppose ram and memory use could be a factor too. If you have enough ram for what you are loading, you can access any rackspace without any (I guess maybe “virtually any”) and downtime.

If not, you may have to use Predictive Loading, but I am getting a bit ahead of things, I think.

In terms of getting a VTS to try that out, it sounds like you would want some type of rompler, like Xpand2, or Halion 7, or Kontakt, or something from the Korg Collection, etc.

The problem is the way most plug sales work (not GP) is there is a regular premium price, then if you wait around for the big sales, you can get a huge discount.

So for example, XPand 2 (a bit dated rompler, but maybe good for your purposes) seems like it is now selling for $99. But, there are sales that occasionally bring the price way down ($20 or $30, I think).

Hope this helps a bit.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff,

Seems like it is possible, I just need to figure out what the limitations are. So I’m assuming if I have a 100 song repitore, but play maybe 30 at a gig. Depending on my RAM, I can load most of it, and then need to find and load songs that aren’t pre-loaded?

My main laptop is a M4 Pro 48 gig ram, MacBook Pro, hopefully it will do the trick

Thanks again

48 GB is pretty decent for a Mac, I think. (I am on a Windows laptop).

There is a good chance your full repertoire will work in a single “Gig File” so you can access everything.

If you, you can create a Gig File for each show with all the songs for that show.

And if that is a problem, you could use Predictive Loading, which will work fine if you follow a set list. (But, I suspect you will not need to use Predictive Loading).

[FYI. There are a bunch of strategies to optimize ram. You can find a lot of discussions on this in this forum].

Jeff

You can try out things with bundled plugins.

You have LostIn70s plugins, 1000 sounds with SynthMaster, and Overloud TH-U.

As for the one-shot samples:

  1. 8X Soundboard / Just play samples, sounds and loops with 8 pads
  2. 8x sample player using the internal SAFP (GP 4.82 and later)

None.
