Possible new feature

Whilst looking at Roland Cloud and reading a few threads here about people’s reluctance to use it in a live situation, I had a thought.

Would it be possible for Gig Performer to switch over to using substitute presets if something went wrong, ie. the computer trying to contact Cloud manager and failing.

It might work like this.

You create GP Presets for any Roland sounds you use. You also create GP Presets for an equivalent sound to be used if the worst happens.

On starting Gig Performer and discovering that your Roland sounds are not going to work, you click on a button and the application knows that each time one of the presets is used by a Rackspace, it instead loads your substitute preset. This obviously means that it has to change the plugin in order for this to work.

How doable is this?

You can duplicate that rackspace and use an alternative plugin.
Or simply avoid to use those plugins that phone home in the middle of the gig.

Yes you could do that, but that means having the presence of mind to call up the substitute Rackspace during a gig, and this could happen many times.

As for not using plugins that phone home during a gig, today it’s Roland using that model, but next week it could be someone else. This might turn out to be the way that the plugin industry is moving.

This depends on you guys
If you all beat up the support with the requests to use the licensing model for gigging musicians, they can create a better model.

They lost a fair amount of profit because of their licensing system. You can find similar threads on other forums.

I wonder what percentage of the plugin world are live users as opposed to studio users?

I use the Roland Cloud stuff, and have had issues with the Activation. Only a couple of times, but the thing is there is no real indication that there is an issue with the plugin. They dont stop working, they just seem to not work properly, and can sometimes affect everything, even crash GP. The first couple of times I got caught out I had no idea this is what was causing my issues, as there was no real indication.
I had wrong assumed that because my MacBook is always on line at home, that I was up to date with the activation. This seems to not be the case and I have to manually log in to the cloud manager to re new the activation each time. Now I know to do that I don worry about it, I have a reminder set for every few weeks to do it.
And I always do it before taking my Macbook out to a gig or rehearsal.

Glad I am not using the Roland Cloud…

Why don’t you complain by Roland about the need of activating their plugins even when you own a lifetime license? I did it several times. If we do it enough, it will perhaps change… :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I use it more than any other VST’s. Once you know whats what it’s not an issue at all. It seems to work fine (for me)
