Plugin to send MIDI clock (Apple Silicon compatible)?

I just realized that, quite shockingly, GP doesn’t send MIDI clock to external devices.

So I read a few threads here that list some workarounds, they seem to involve using Ableton for this, which kind of defeats the purpose of using GP to me, which is a replacement for a DAW, if I have to use a DAW why would I even need GP.

I then searched for vst plugins that could do it, found some, but they are mostly old, and none of the ones I tried seem to work on Apple Silicon.

Does anyone know a plugin that works?

I could probably make a script for this but the problem is that GP only generates beats with Global Playhead on, which is something I would really want to avoid.

This may or may not help as a work around, GP as MIDI Clock Master

I saw that thread, didn’t quite even understand what it is about, honestly speaking. But what I can see is that it’s for working with Ableton. If I need to run Ableton, I can send midi clock from there directly, so I’m not sure what the point of that solution is.

The whole point is that it does not need Ableton Live to work it allows GP to work as a master MIDI clock for hardware. It uses the Ableton Link protocol to get the timing information.

From where?

For the vast majority of users, live performance hosts like GP are hardly replacements for DAWs. They serve entirely different purposes ---- otherwise nobody would have bothered to invent them!

From any of the numerous third party applications that support Ableton Link

That majority includes me, I’m using it as a performance host. I use DAWs for entirely different purposes, that’s why I say that running a DAW in parallel just to sync devices to tempo in GP doesn’t make any sense to me.

Is GP one of those applications?

Yes, the GP Link button stands for Ableton Link.

That part I get, was wondering if GP could work as a master cause who knows, I never expected it to be unable to send midi clock.

Ok, that’s great, then what’s the part of the discussion regarding that pure plug thing, wiring view, connecting pure plug with pure data etc about?

Do I understand it correctly that the solution from that thread is a configuration file for that Pure data application that runs separately, receives whatever it receives from GP via Ableton Link, and than based on that information sends midi clock messages to a port configured in that app? And the rest in that thread is just a general discussion?

Also, Ableton Link only works when global playhead is on, correct?

You understand correctly, Pure data is Free application that can support the Ableton Link Protocol and achieve a hardware MIDI clock out. It was offered as a zero cost solution for those without or not wishing to purchase Ableton Live.

It works without reference to the playhead, so the clock is running exactly as the MIDI clock runs in hardware.

I use this for driving a hardware sequencer.

Awesome, so just to confirm, even with no playback in GP, if, say, I switch songs and global tempo changes, that app will receive the new bpm value?

Yep that is exactly how I use it.
