deactivate everything in the unused paths

Another important detail I missed (doh!). By default, path 2 and 3 are hidden
and not passing sound. Yet still eating CPU. You need to enable them first before you deactivate and mute them.

OBX → discoDSP OB-XD. Used to be one of the best free poly-synths out there, now it’s commercial but very cheap. Much lighter than Arturia’s take on the OB.

OBX → Synapse Obsession. Commercial, but affordable. Very nice!! Extremely light on CPU like all Synapse Audio Plug-Ins (ie… DUNE).

Yeah, I got into the habit of recommending discoDSP to everyone back when it used to be freeware, because in that category it was unbeatable. But Synapse certainly gets closest to the feeling of playing the real thing, sans the constant re-tuning. I once got to record with a vintage and not so well maintained OB-X, beautiful lush sound but it got out of tune within about 30 seconds and needed to be calibrated. But 30 seconds was enough to record my OB-parts for the song, so it was worth it Beautiful (and massive) piece of synth history.
