Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer

Again a preset and this time it’s a no-brainer (music from the original except for flute):

The Shakuhachi sample is included on one of the floppy disks of the Emulator II - and also in the Arturia Emulator II V presets. Just some minor tweaking and some compression, chorus and reverb the signal chain.

Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (Florian)

I believe it’s the notes E flat - A flat - B flat - E flat (octave) and back.

The sample can also be found in:

  • Tears for Fears - When In Love With A Blind Man (0:45)
  • Eurorythmics - Conditioned Soul (0:02)
  • Zillertaler Schürzenjäger - Sierra Madre (0:17)
  • Die Flippers - Lotusblume (0:36)
  • and probably many more

That’s right florian.

My band played it last night. Here’s a brief playthrough of the sounds I created/used.

@jwdnty what Brass sound do you use?

Wow! While I don’t know the other parts by heart, they sound close to perfection to my ears.
So cool that we’re able to record what we play. :+1:

Hi @tripleB
I use various layers of:

  • EW Hollywood Pop Brass
  • NI Session Horns
  • and Roland JD-800
It took me ages to find the right combination of swells, stacatto and sustained notes.
Quite a CPU intensive sound but works really well live.

Here’s the same brass patch used for a Christmas number we’re starting to work on (Donny Hathaway’s This Christmas):

Super impressive @jwdnty !!

Can you specify (because I’m going to be performing this one too in the near future!!!)
Which VST you used for the SWELLS? I find that Session Horns is very functional (worked beautifully for Addicted to Love!!) but for swells I can’t seem to make it work. Was that on EW Pop Brass?

Wow! Those brass sounds are incredible! Sounds better than the isolated tracks.

Thank you @nebulon5

I’m going to post a .gig file for you with the plugins and settings all mapped.

The swells are coming from Session Horns - you just need to set the Velocity Switch as I’ve done below (see top left of pic):

Thank you @Narf, much appreciated! Of course all the work was really with developing these great VSTs. I like the EW Pop Brass, but find NI Session Horns far more playable and useful for my purposes.

@jwdnty THX for sharing!
I will have a closer look at the weekend - looks very interesting
Garden work at the weekend has to wait until the horns are set up or rearranged :joy:

PS: currently experimenting with Session Horns, the goold old Triton Brass and GP Chord Maker

Do you have the standard or Pro version of Session Horns, out of interest? I never upgraded to Pro but have been tempted.

GP-related duties should always be prioritised over gardening

Basically yes, but my wife constantly sends more or less regular non-maskable interrupts which my brain scheduler can not ignore :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I upgraded with on of the last discounts to pro. The extended features looked promising to me, however spend not too much time so far.

So no gardening today and a small check of the gig file @jwdnty provided.

To not further hijack this thread I shared my own brass example here Amy Winehouse - Valerie (Brass Section)
