Hi to all,
First time asking the community a question -
What is the best way to control volumes of rack spaces from song to song.
I have found that in some instances it’s seems better to have individual volumes in each rackspace as opposed to having them globally, Seems the mixer option is the best way. I would think this is a topic that has come up, but couldn’t find it. Hoping that more seasoned user could suggest something that’s worked for them.
Thanks
Sal
I route all my local rackspaces to the global rackspace and control the volume there with a Gain/Balance plugin right before routing to the audio out. That way I only have to adjust one dial.
I have a final gain block in all rackspaces, mapped to a widget on the panel.
During practicing at home, I set the volume song by song to the desired loudness.
Then next adjustment song by song during band rehearsal to fit in the band context.
Therefore, I have mapped a knob on my controller keyboard to this widget.
Finally, after a few gigs, fine tuning from live experience.
Then I don’t touch the volume any more, no real time adjustments during gigs.
To ease the work of the FOH sound engineer further, I have a limiter plug-in in the global rackspace before it goes to the audio output. Limiting peak sounds to a constant level.
I do the same: last block before sending audio to the global rackspace is a „patch trim“ gain block mapped to a dedicated widget to set the overall level of what I stacked/layered/splitted/balanced within the rackspace.
I use the Gain block after the mixer like the others, linked to a slider and two meters in the Rackspace. this is to control the overall level of the Rackspace.
What I find works best (for me) though, is to record our gigs or rehearsals, take off the keyboards and re record them, making sure each sound fits in the mix and saving the Backspace. its not perfect by a long shot, but it gets me most of the way there.
I also have buttons to push any changes to the Rackspaces from the Set list, so any changes I make while playing gets saved to the relevant rack space for next time.
I guess it’s just trial and error.
