Anyone who has done this successfully, is there anything I am missing, and are any of my thoughts actually NOT a problem after all?
I have built my .gig on Windows (as the DAW the songwriter used is locked into windows, was just easier on the same machine so far)
Planning to use Mac as the ‘live’ machine (has a great reputations for reliability on stage), and having this windows laptop as a backup in case anything breaks before a gig.
I am planning to port the gig performer folder itself, containing everything aside the plugins over to mac and see how it runs, but I have many thoughts.
VSTs (not AU)
- I have used VST3s not AU - does this necessarily mean they will work on mac too, or is there some kind of stuff behind the scenes that will stop it from ‘just working’ on both machines, maybe the windows file has loaded in a windows VST3 in some way, so on mac I can’t just use the same block.
Or Just because they are VST3s doesn’t mean they are coded to work both on windows and mac? or? do all VST3s work on windows and mac by default…
Locations
- All my files are relative, inside the gig performer folder… aside the plugins… the plug ins of course automatically installed in multiple places on Windows…
Do I need to put the plugins all in the gig performer folder so they are relative? And then just port the whole gig folder over
Wont that break other stuff in the VSTs themselves?
Can’t I just set the .gig file up one time to ‘look here for VSTs’ if on windows and ‘look here for VSTs’ if on mac, so I don’t need to make them relative which I imagine would potentially break the VSTs as they may be expecting the originally set locations?
Well the plugins probably dont need to be sent over because… I already have the plug ins in the default locations on Mac so, putting them in the gig performer folder too is… just putting an incompatible version in the… the plugins themselves are… different on windows and mac anyway when you download the AU & VST bundle from the website? ahh I am just getting in a muddle I’ll stop there.
File mirroring
- I was originally planning to keep them both synced up to the same cloud drive so they are always automatically up to date but - now I am thinking that could cause many issues from the device trying to sync, half uploading a file, or running into errors syncing in random ways on stage, probably best to just cut that out and deal with maintaining 2 separate files & sending the .gig files over from master to copy instead, more manual, more time, maybe more reliable.
Rig Manager
I saw a thread talking about using rig manager but, I don’t see how that would be necessary, my mac and my windows both seem to recognise my midi controller perfectly fine already.
Thank you!
