OCTAVE HS-1 - 10" touchscreen multi-effects?

This is a Windows 11 unit with audio interface, DAW and VST player.

https://octavetech.eu/

It’s equipped with a modified version of Gig Performer and Overloud TH-U.

I’m wondering about this device and about this site, which is ambiguous: the menus aren’t clickable, some links are dead and those that work don’t provide any useful information.

No details on the technical specifications (audio interface, processor model, etc).

I asked for information by email on 27 September, but never got a reply…

If it’s anything like PaintAudio’s recent device, it’s not even worth looking at (this CE1 has a low Intel N200 processor).

This OCTAVE HS-1 costs 888 €.

Based on what you said about their website and lack of response, I wouldn’t be surprised that your hard earned 888 euro would get you nothing.

Modified?
Did the hack Gig Performer?

Hi Hermon,

Let’s set things straight from the start before things run wild:

  1. Yes, it is a brand new product coming out in early December (we were at NAMM 2024 and Guitar Summit 2024 btw). (Octave Technologies on Instagram: "(HS-1) World's 1st Windows 11 VST Player. Pre-order now! 🔥🔥🔥www.octavetech.eu")
  2. The ‘modified’ word that you mention is for Windows 11 and NOT Gig Performer (our Windows 11 image is modified to run as smooth as possible regarding audio (uninstalled services, widgets, DPC latency tweaks, BIOS tweaks, etc.) and that image will be periodically monitored and updated by us.
  3. I’m uploading the tech specs in case you want to have a look (still incomplete, so disregard any links that don’t work in it). Bear with us while we update our website. We have a million things to take care before the 1st batch arrives in December.
  4. We don’t want to spoil the surprise, but yes, we have many software collaborators that we are really proud of having on our side (Overloud and Deskew to name a few. Both will have their free ‘Octave’ version software pre-installed on our device).
  5. Regarding what can be run on our device, there is no issue of running the latest VST software of the market (although it wasn’t designed to load 10 instances of NAM profiles all at once. That is why we have Rackspaces, to switch from one instance to the next). Link
  6. Regarding the CE-1 product from China, most probably it won’t have any proper CE and FCC certifications (it is a one man show) so you won’t see it in retail stores anywhere plus its price is $1,100 without any customs (since it is shipped from China). Ours is an EU product.
  7. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Hello,

Thank you for your quick reply, as I never got one when I asked for it by email almost two months ago, and I now feel a little more reassured about the legitimacy and seriousness of your company, which I hope has nothing to do with the Chinese equipment mentioned above

As far as the technical specifications of this device are concerned, I’ve found one piece of information that I was missing: the processor, which is the main engine of a machine.

I’ll summarise by saying that it’s a Intel Celeron processor with 2.00 GHz base frequency / 2.90 GHz burst frequency, it supports 16 GB max memory size and burst technnology.

  • This Celeron processor, although recent and much improved, seems to me to have a rather low clock speed, I thought that to use Gig Performer in comfortable conditions it needed a speed between 3 and 4 GHz.
However, I know from experience that an optimised PC can give excellent performance even with mid-range or older components if they are of good quality.
I have a spare Lenovo when I’m playing live that dates back to 2012 with a third-generation i5 processor and which perfectly supports the resource demands used on a PC with an i7-12650H.

  • no Intel turbo boost technology but burst technnology: turbo boost can maintain higher frequencies for longer periods, while burst performance is usually for very short durations, which can have a negative impact on the live use of Gig performer, even in single but heavy rackspace ?

  • 16 GB max memory size : does this still allow 2 x 16 GB modules to be used in the machine?

  • Mini SD Card Slot: Up to 1TB : I have 2 M.2 disks of 1 TB each in my PC for my sound libraries: I could replace these with an external disk of 1 TB + a 1 TB SD card.
Does the latter offer sufficient transfer speeds for use in Gig performer?

  • Unbalanced Line Outputs (1-2): need DI Boxes more to connect on PA system.

Regarding the operating system and integrated applications:

  • Windows 11: I misspoke in my previous message: I know that you’re offering an optimised version of Windows, which is useful for those who don’t want to go through the tedious but rewarding process of optimisation - what I however did thanks to @npudar :+1:
And periodically updating the Windows image is a really good thing.

  • Gig Performer: what does the "Gig Perfomer (Octave version) " mean if it’s not a modified version? What’s the difference with the official Deskew Technologies version? (I did not find in your site the complete list of the Gig Performer features included with the HS-1).
Anyway, I suppose I’ll just have to install my Deskew version on this device. I asked the question so that I could give a precise answer to any musicians interested in this product.

Others:

  • the connectors seem to me to be complete enough to meet my needs

  • Microphone stand thread: excellent idea, provided you use a decent and solid stand !

Please understand that everything I’ve said before or now is not a criticism but a simple observation: I’m very interested in this type of device for live use, which would even more simplify the volume, weight and speed of installation of my current guitar rig.
But you know that it’s always very difficult when you’re not familiar with a product to distinguish between advertising marketing and material reality.

I’ve just come back from a short tour of 4 performances 1500 km from home, having travelled by train, bus and underground: this kind of travel requires ideally compact equipment, and your product is very tempting, even though I’m already travelling with all my equipment in a computer bag and a travel guitar on my shoulder.

As I write this message, your site is not accessible (504 Gateway Time-out) to download the complete users guide at https://OctaveTech.eu/Manual.PDF.
If it is possible, could you post it here? I (or others) may therefore have the opportunity to ask you further questions after reading this document.

Finally and just for fun, look at a place where I’ve played that has some similarities with the photo you posted. This is in such places that I use to play.

Thank you for your interest. We’ve must have missed your email in the vast amount of emails that we collect each day. We were at NAMM 2024 last year with a very early prototype to start collecting info regarding our product and what musicians wanted. We started a very early pre-order campaign to gain traction and after one year of relentless designing we have a final product in our hands.

I have a spare Lenovo when I’m playing live that dates back to 2012 with a third-generation i5 processor and which perfectly supports the resource demands used on a PC with an i7-12650H

Regarding CPU power, to put things into perspective, an i5 3210m CPU from a 2013 Macbook Pro is demolished by these newer Celeron CPUs by almost 66% but at the same time you need to take into consideration air flow (and good quality parts) and how you successfully design a product that moves air quickly to be stable at even 80% CPU load non-stop on ALL conditions (not cutting corners here). So yeah, people are asking for superfast hardware but that comes at a cost ( both on the consumer side and related design costs). If this was an i7 CPU the retail price would be tripled! Furthermore, good luck moving 100W of hot air out of the device

  • 16 GB max memory size : does this still allow 2 x 16 GB modules to be used in the machine?

16GB ram is the max memory size ( it is soldered on the mainboard) although the SSD m.2 is not soldered but you void the warranty if you open up the device.

I could replace these with an external disk of 1 TB + a 1 TB SD card.
Does the latter offer sufficient transfer speeds for use in Gig performer?

SD card transfer rates are at least high-speed (25mb/sec) but I need to double check that. However, you have plenty of other options for high speed transfer. There is a fully functional USB-C port on our device so you’ll have lightning fast transfers. An alternative would be to use a tiny USB 3.0 stick (there are four USB 3.0 ports on our device).

Gig Performer: what does the "Gig Perfomer (Octave version) " mean if it’s not a modified version? What’s the difference with the official Deskew Technologies version?

It is a GP version specifically made for us by Deskew with some elements missing compared with the full version. I cannot comment on what will be missing or not since we are still working on this but rest assured you will be updated once we solidify everything.

As I write this message, your site is not accessible (504 Gateway Time-out) to download the complete users guide at https://OctaveTech.eu/Manual.PDF.

As I said, this .pdf is still ‘work in progress’ (so is our website) so we will update the link once we finish with the manual.

Finally and just for fun, look at a place where I’ve played that has some similarities with the photo you posted. This is in such places that I use to play.

Really liked the place! The one that you see in the photo is a Medieval Hall dating back to the 15th Century. Cool place for gigs.

Please understand that everything I’ve said before or now is not a criticism but a simple observation: I’m very interested in this type of device for live use, which would even more simplify the volume, weight and speed of installation of my current guitar rig.

Glad that you liked our product. I just wanted to update everybody regarding our product before third parties start assuming things ( as you know, online assumptions spreads like wildfire…). Rest assured, we left no stone unturned (even designing a removable battery for your convenience). We’ll see you in NAMM 2025! Booth 1738!

Take care
