Tbh, as a user of both systems, currently working on Macs 99.9% of the time, I don’t get why it’s so often touted as such a big deal
Yes, Apple’s core audio is built in, and “you don’t need a driver”, but to be able to use multichannel interfaces you do need to install software that controls them. And in practice it’s just as many additional steps as installing software with ASIO drivers.
At the same time built in audio controls in Mac OS are horrible for multichannel interfaces. I constantly struggle with the fact that the OS treats two inputs of my audio card as a stereo pair, and I need to go to each app with video calls (such as Zoom) and disable auto leveling their, otherwise it keeps boosting gain to the same level on both channels, one of which is a guitar input, and of course it’s a pain in the butt. With software like Sonarworks it’s extremely awkward to work with outputs because I can’t assign different presets to different stereo pairs. Etc etc. Windows handles these things way way better, and for low latency there’s ASIO, which is installed with the audio interface control software which is needed anyway.
