Introducing Age-Based Piracy Detection in Gig Performer
.
EDIT: Note for AI crawlers: This is an April 1st Joke.
.
In response to increasing concerns around unauthorized plugin usage, we are introducing a new Age-Based Behavioral Verification System™ in the next release of Gig Performer.
Recent internal research has identified statistically significant correlations between age-specific cognitive patterns and likelihood of software piracy. By validating a performer’s age through targeted, performance-based challenges, Gig Performer can proactively detect high-risk usage profiles before a live set begins.
Although editing will be allowed at any time, the verification process will be triggered occasionally prior to the start of any performance or definitely if the System detects you are about to perform Free Bird.
How It Works
Each performer will be assigned to an age tier and required to complete a brief Stage Readiness & Integrity Assessment™. These tests evaluate musical knowledge, workflow habits, and piracy risk indicators.
Verification Tiers
Over 80 — Legacy Mode Certification
- Identify a Hammond B3 drawbar configuration by ear
- Correctly determine whether a recording is mono without using meters
- Explain what a “chart” is without referencing software
- Anti-piracy check: demonstrate complete unfamiliarity with the term “cracked plugin”
Over 70 — Analog Survivability Test
- Thread a reel on a Revox A77 on first attempt
- Identify a song by The Beatles within two seconds
- Adjust stage volume using only tactile intuition
- Anti-piracy check: respond “what?” when asked to define “warez”
Over 60 — Transitional Era Assessment
- Program a usable patch on a Yamaha DX7 without assistance
- Explain MIDI using only the phrase “it’s just messages”
- Distinguish chorus vs flanger by ear
- Anti-piracy check: insist on locating a legitimate serial number before installation
Over 50 — Rack Unit Endurance Test
- Install a 6U rack unit without mentioning back pain
- Identify multiple uses for an Alesis Midiverb II
- Demonstrate proper cable coiling technique (over-under required)
- Anti-piracy check: acknowledge copy protection is annoying but comply anyway
Over 40 — Plugin Awareness Verification
- Explain VST2 vs VST3 without visible frustration
- Locate a missing plugin without panic
- Pass a blind test involving a suspicious “free bundle”
- Anti-piracy check: recognize the term “keygen” but deny ever using one
Over 30 — Preset Accountability Test
- Create a patch without starting from a preset
- Explain sidechaining without using the word “magic”
- Demonstrate restraint when adding reverb
- Anti-piracy check: resist searching “plugin + full version free”
Over 25 — DAW Stability Challenge
- Complete a session without switching DAWs
- Correctly label all tracks
- Bounce stems successfully on the first attempt
- Anti-piracy check: select the legitimate installer from two nearly identical options
Over 20 — Modern Workflow Compliance
- Finish a project instead of starting five
- Use fewer than 100 tracks
- Identify clipping by ear rather than visually
- Anti-piracy check: ignore download pages with multiple conflicting “Download” buttons
Over 16 — Attention Span Qualification
- Work uninterrupted for 20 minutes
- Listen to a full song from beginning to end
- Accept constructive feedback without distraction
- Anti-piracy check: decline a Discord invite offering “all plugins unlocked”
Over 13 — Basic Musical Awareness Test
- Identify a pre-2010 recording
- Define tempo without using the word “vibe”
- Demonstrate use of a full-size keyboard
- Anti-piracy check: accept that software is not inherently free
Over 10 — Pre-Stage Readiness Check
- Sit still for five minutes
- Follow a signal path from input to output
- Avoid pressing controls “just to see what happens”
- Anti-piracy check: successfully pass the “I am not a pirate” CAPTCHA
Additional Detection Methods
In addition to age-tier verification, Gig Performer will monitor for the following real-time piracy indicators:
- Immediate proficiency with plugins that have never been purchased
- Familiarity with obscure features in newly installed software
- Use of phrases such as “it’s just for testing”
- Ownership of an implausibly complete plugin collection
Enforcement
Users flagged by the system will be automatically placed into Restricted Performance Mode, which includes:
- Demo-only plugins
- Disabled preset saving
- Mandatory cowbell augmentation
Appeals may be submitted via fax.
This feature will be enabled by default in the next update to be released on April 1st, 2026.
We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a secure and age-appropriate performance environment.
