MIDI Signal Gets to Plugin, No Audio Gets Out

I’m new to Gig Performer but not to Plugins, electronic keyboards, synths, etc. My first efforts to set up a rackspace are giving me some issues. I’m starting with baby steps to get acclimated. The rackspaces that are pre-installed with GP work great, but when I try to insert my own plugins I’m hitting a snag.

I have indeed read the Gig Performer 4.x User Manual, combed through the forum and FB pages to see if I can find answers - lots of suggestions involving syncing MIDI channels on controllers and instruments, but I couldn’t find this specific problem addressed.

My rig:

MacBook Pro 16" 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 on Sequoia 15.6

Kurzweil KM88 controller keyboard - MIDI transmit channel OMNI

I began by utilizing the Piano, Organ, Stage template rackspace and attempting to insert my own plugins.

First attempt - Insert Pianoteq 9 VST as my plugin. MIDI in signal to plugin lights up on GP wiring diagram, Pianoteq window indicates input signal (virtual keyboard plays), but no signal to Audio Out block on GP. Tried several troubleshooting chores (switching through MIDI channels, yes the volume is turned up, etc.) - no joy.

Removed Pianoteq and inserted Dexibel T2L plugin - signal reaches Audio Out block on GP. Joy!

Tried several Kontakt instruments and East West Opus instruments - all receive MIDI and respond but do not pass audio to the Audio Out block on GP.

With my “old” rig, I am using Pianoteq, Kontakt and Opus successfully in standalone mode, with discrete MIDI channel assignments, so I know the equipment can and does play nice together.

Many thanks to the community for your assistance.

Can you upload a small gig file with just pianoteq where you get no audio out?

While you are following Paul’s suggestion (always a good idea!), what happens if you use the Pianoteq virtual keyboard (onscreen)?

Plinking the Pianoteq virtual keyboard with the mouse yields no output. When I play the KM88, the virtual keyboard “plays” as well (with no audio out).

Thanks Paul, and apologies, but I’m not sure I understand what you are suggesting. Could you kindly elaborate? Thank you.

Can you post a screenshot of your rackspace? Do you definitely have a piano loaded? I would double check midi channels are all the same.

Oh, use the track and the Global Midi monitors. What do they show when you hit a key?

There is no such thing as OMNI for transmit unless you’re saying that your keyboard is sending 16 duplicate messages for every note

It’s probably the case that you are sending on the wrong Chanel. Open global midi monitor, play a single note on your keyboard and then upload the screen shot

In a post you can attach a gig file to upload it.
Just click on the upload icon when editing a post.

Here are screen shots which I hope depict the problem.

Should say “Rec. MIDI Ch. ‘Any’”. Standalone application running outside of Gig Performer, works perfectly.

Gig Performer MIDI monitor is obscured but MIDI channel shown is 1 (same as KM88).

Thanks for looking at this!

Here’s one more to show MIDI traffic for the last scenario (no audio transmitted).

Just for grins I tried to use Pianoteq 7 on MIDI ch. “Any” and lo and behold, it works and passes audio! (It appears to be in mono, however, for some reason…?) As I mentioned in my initial post, Kontakt and East West Opus are also not producing audio output but do show MIDI traffic.

Where is the Volume slider set at in this view of Pianoteq 9?

The reason is because you are not using the first two audio output ports of the pianoteq plugin block

Oh, I originally took pictures of my screen to show what was going on.

I was requested to use the computer’s “screen shot” tool instead (easier to see). So, I figured I might as well mention that for you going forward.
