Jazz Pianist Jacob Karlzon On Backstage With Gig Performer

Did Jacob ever say what his favorite electric piano plugin was in the Backstage video?

The plugin text was “V8”, but the level control showed the word “Lounge”. I’m guessing that he used to run Lounge Lizard and that he switched to the Rhodes branded plugin. I would have liked to have heard him talk about his impressions.

I’ve been using Keyscape, and while I like the tone, the notes that have a strong mechanical attack can sound repetitive. A real Rhodes might have a (very) noisy key that draws attention, but without the digital sample repetition thing. I wonder if V8 or LL have a more analog feel on the harsh notes.

Maybe @kzon can answer this one for you

Hi! Sorry, I lost myself in everything else that was discussed yesterday with Brett :joy:
Had such a great time!
You are absolutely right about the electric piano mystery.
I have a leasing contract with my MacBook Pro and therefore mine and Loung Lizard’s ways parted last year. After being through different plug ins, I’m now hooked on Rhodes’ own. There is a certain authenticity in the different ways to tweak it that I truly like. With Rhodes and, of course other legendary pianos or keyboards, there are also a lot of different aesthetics etc from different times and productions to consider when finding your goto plug in.
I like the lush sound of the Keyscape Rhodes and use it in the contexts that call for that specific sound. At the same time, I like to have that dirty sound you can get out of the V8 and together with the other effects in the plug in you have many ways to go with it.
I definitely think it has a certain “analog” touch to it. The best way to decide which plug in to go for is to test it. If you discover that you’ve been playing longer with it than you thought, it might be the one for you!
Hope you find a plug in you like!

Yes, Keyscape is lush, and needs an amp or saturation plugin to get a good dirty sound. There’s no mistaking it for a Wurli.

I’m focused on other sounds now, but I expect to return to the Rhodes in the future. When the time comes, I’ll try their demo.

Thanks for sharing your insights and music on the Backstage live stream yesterday. It was informative, entertaining, and enjoyable.
