I finally have some “downtime”. I have stuck with GP4 running on an Intel MacBookPro on Monterey (now 12.7.5) to get through a string of dates, a move, etc. My current Mac:
I want to now update to GP5. Casting a line out here. Is my Intel MacBookPro now a dinosaur (is GP5 optimized for the M chipsets?) I’m considering updating to a newer MacBookPro for the best performance. If my intel mac works fine, I’ll keep it for now, and figure out which current OS is best for my plugins. I use Cherry Hill, Arturia V, Korg Triton, Kontac, Sample Tank, more. Any advice from anyone using this intel macbookpro 2019 with GP5, and which OS you;re running is appreciated. AND… I have to get a new M3 Max for my video editing system, and it’s gonna be tough not to try GP5 with it… Anyone using the M3 Max with 48gb of ram seeing a big difference from their older Intel MacBookPro when updated? I use an RME UCX audio interface with it’s TotalMix ap which is cool.
Ok, great! I was pretty sure of that. But wondering how much performance boost I will see from what I have now, to an M3 Max: (will Ram from 48 MB to 64 MB be a considerable difference to latency and performance for how many plugs I can layer before glitching?)
Apple M3 Max chip with 16‑core CPU, 40‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
64GB unified memory (or 48)
1TB SSD storage
How much increase in performance from my current system, to this new M3 max system? Any idea?
Just to be clear, while we would of course love you to upgrade, GP4 does run natively under Apple Silicon
For live performance, I am still using Intel Macbook Pros from 2019 with macOS 10.15 (catalina) and I have not found ANY compelling reason to upgrade. I’m also using RME UFX - works great.
Sure, thanks, I’m wondering if GP5 on my current MacBookPro (Intel 2019) would be faster, slower, or the same, running the same gig/setlist compared to GP4.
Good to know. I’m just wondering if upgrading to that fast MacBookPro M3 Max chip with 48 GB or 64GB ram with GP5, what % of performance increase will I see for layering more plugins… I’m also considering using GP for live vocal effects, instead of a TC Voicelive3X vocal fx pedal.
I’m also using an intel machine. 2018 MacBook Pro with Ventura. I never got to downgrade any further…
My backup machine has Monterey and works exactly the same
I’m using Kontakt, Korg Triton and extreme, waves FX, Thu, ST4Max with 2 88 key controllers and an Akai mdp232… the machine works absolutely fine… idle CPU is always around 94%.
I can also say that after a 3h gig, I can’t fry an egg on the machine like i could before, doing exactly the same thing in mainstage… Haha
I read all this with interest. New to GP and on 5. I am playing around with it at home on a 27inc iMac ( intel ) which clearly I won’t take out to gigs. I am considering replacing this machine with a mac mini ( M chip ) soon for Logic etc. However with the plug in Rosetta issue do you think that would work well for using GP with third party plug ins etc or would I be better off trying to pick up an intel mac mini or similar to run my GP rig thank you
Great question — I’m still using Mac Book Pros from 2019 for live performance (running MacOS 10.15) that I purchased as refurbished.
I just got a new development system that is Apple Silicon and have already discovered that several plugins have not been (and won’t be) ported to Apple Silicon. So I’ve lost NI Absynth for example. Very annoying – I don’t know why they didn’t just recompile for Silicon and the question then is what else won’t be available.
Edit: of course only if you have installed universal versions of your plugins… At least this will reduce your list of plugins to check by reading specs
I did the switch quite some time ago, I “lost” only the PG8-X - Most of the current Plugins are running native on Apple Silicon (in my case).
Yeah… Mac did Mac things and have throttled the Intel Devices pretty much at Monterey. Everything should work fine in Monterey and I wouldn’t update after that. Seems like they are only supporting their M series and dropping further support for intel after their relationship “breakup”
Wait a moment, please. I need to understand what is beeig discussed here.
Did I understand right?
Are you saying that a Mac mini M4 16GB RAM will perform better than an Intel i9 Macbook Pro with 32GB??
How is that even possible?
I am strugling with my Gigfile because it uses about 32GB RAM (consuming all the available RAM of my Mac). How can a 16GB RAM machine load a file that requires 32GB RAM??
