I have found a mixture of using the Guitar Amps (had good success with the HIAMP model) and overdriving the gain on the Leslie Amp 122A or 147, but there are lots of options to achieve that overdriven sound to suit your own situations. Here’s a couple of GP User Presets for B-3X VST3 version that I use… tweaking the Leslie gain will give you more or less grit - just tweak to taste.
@DaveBoulden Sorry for not having t hem checked yet, I was really busy the last days (with work and GP). I have typically the drawbars and some basic settings in each song that uses a Hammond and had to change it.
Since copy/pasted panels do not automatically restore the mappings (not even when the plugin name where mapped to is the same, or if there is just one of the same type), I had to do it manually for about 40 songs (and next weeks another 40).
I also took this opportunity to get rid of my big script. So for this I also changed the typical 32 channel mixer for a much hierarchical way. And since I don’t do scripting, I cannot change the faders to either drawbars of the Hammond or to an audio mixer, I use the 9 faders for the Hammond and some of the knobs for volume, and if there is no Hammond, I can use also some sliders when I want. I’m going to try in the rehearsal room the next weeks how this works.
Can you please provide some additional info about the usage in combination with the B-3X and the TR5. What is the difference / advantage compared to the included B-3X amps / effects?
“Mercurial SS-11X preamp is the most perfect, naturally sounding drive for the Hammond vsts at the default setting. Using it between the organ and Leslie. Expression pedal drives the pre-amp very well.”
I have tried and I was convinced. But that is personal taste. I think, that the Hammond BX3 isn’t as assertive live as I’d hope. It’s better in this constellation, but I’m not quite satisfied yet.
That sale looks like a good deal. Does the IK B3-X natively support Apple Silicon or do I need to run GP with Rosetta? The site doesn’t seem to specify either way.
Thanks! It doesn’t seem to be clear, but I just realized they have a demo. I’m going to pull that down tonight and see if it works.
EDIT… NM. I’m just getting over being sick and apparently can’t read straight. According to that link, it should be native. Sweet! Going to check it out tonight and may be grabbing it!
@DaveBoulden I finally found time yesterday to check it out. Your combination of amp and leslie works great together with overdrive. I need to check with me what other differences there are, as your sound is more overdriven than me, and not sure what parameters are different.
@SirTommes - I have tried the Mercurial SS-11X preamp" and it sounds good, but in the use case with the B3 it’s a bit like a one trick pony. Only the default settings are useful.
I have also used Soundtoys Decapitator and Devil-Loc Deluxe between the B-3X and the Leslie due to a recommendation i found some time ago in the GP forum. Good combination!
I also found the Moogerfooger MF-109S Saturator Plugin useful and interesting.
They all are more flexible and have more soundoptions compared to the SS-11X.
I just installed it today and went through all the presets. The presets seem pretty comprehensive to me. (I didn’t count how many there were. Could it be around 100(?). Guessing).
This is a great VST… esspecially if you have a Hammond SK series as a controller as all the main drawbars, buttons and lesley functions are automatically mapped.
