Help with SAFP Markers

I have been on the forums now for a few months. I (currently) do two big shows a year for a class I teach. This past weekend was our fourth semester and fourth show. This was our second show where GP and TotalmixFX basically ran the whole show off my Surface Pro 10 for Business. So far, I’ve been very happy with GP and all its features. Every time we have a show I learn and re-evaluate workflow and how things could be better implemented or streamlined. This will be the first of a few posts asking for help with best practices for GP.

The most pressing issue which reared its ugly head during the concert was an issue I already had a workaround for, but there were an unusual amount of technical issues before the show, and I had to go super Saiyan roadie to put out a bunch of figurative fires before the show and I was not able to do some of my pre-show checks.

GP runs basically everything - click track for IEMS (which uses the SAFP), individual backing tracks using AFP (sometimes two instances if I need more than 8 tracks), MIDI files that run the light show using MFP (all file players using sync and multi where applicable), VST3 synths, VST3 drums, and the lyric extension tool that goes to two monitors. I keep vocals, and compression/effects for vocals, on outboard gear, but ultimately go through TotalmixFX. I also have Chauvet ShowXpress running, OBS with OSC for OBS running (with GP triggering OSC to start videos at certain times), and I have TotalmixFX hosting for Totalmix Remote and have about 8 iPads running so each performer can control their own IEM mix. I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 running Second Screen so I can control all of this on stage or from wherever as needed.

I have been impressed by how well it all works together.

One persistent issue I have had is that if a song on a setlist or rack space starts, and at the end of the song the master play head does not stop after the MIDI, backing tracks, and click track finish, it has a tendency to crash GP. GP will just freeze until I get a GP is not responding message and I have to manually shut down GP. The way around this is to add a marker at the end of the click track in SAFP that stops the master play button. As long as that happens everything runs fine.

The problem is on occasion a marker from one or more of the songs will just disappear when reloading a gig file. I’ll put the marker back, but no matter how many times I save the gig file after, it will on occasion have the marker disappear again. It won’t be for all rack spaces, it seems to be random which songs are affected, and it doesn’t happen every time. I never move the song files once I finalize a rack space and especially once I finalize the setlist. It has gotten to the point where I just double check all the SAFP instances in each rack space before a rehearsal or show - except this last show where I got swamped with a slew of outboard gear problems mostly dealing with our wireless IEMs. The second to last song ended up crashing GP after it was over and between sets. I noticed the play head was still on right after I switched to the next song on my Galaxy Tab S8 and it crashed as the marker had disappeared and did not stop GP at the end of the song. There was some dead time as I reloaded the show, but it my haste I forgot to reload the lyric extension tool as well, and a few of my students forgot about a double chorus at the end of our last song and half ended the song 12 bars too soon while the others carried on.

I would very much like to know more about where markers are saved, and what could cause them to disappear. Every time a marker disappears I redo the marker and then save the gig file. I am trying to figure out what I might be doing to where a marker might disappear. To the best of my knowledge I am not moving any files once I have created the rack space. I do have two rigs - one is a rehearsal rig centered on a Babyface Pro FS with a Behringer ADA8200, and our main rig which is centered on a Digiface USB with a Focusrite Clarette Octo Pre+, Behringer ADA8200, and a Behringer DEQ2496 Ultracurve Pro (which starts the signal chain to FOH). Once I make the rack spaces for each song I will create the setlist and then basically have two identical gig files just wired differently for the two systems. I do export rack spaces so I can load them in a new gig file if needed, but for weeks I use the gig file exclusively for each system. The only thing I can think of is I might reroute audio signal chains in GP, but all the audio and midi files are the same. Another thing I did recently was move the MFP to the global rack space, give it a handle, and had it switch to the correct MIDI file when I switched songs in the setlist view, but I didn’t touch the SAFP in each rack space instance, and this problem has happened before and after that change. I was thinking of doing the same thing in SAFP - putting it in the global rack space and have it switch to the correct click track when I switch songs in a setlist. Would that work better? Again after any change, and especially after I see a marker is gone and I replace it, I always save the gig file. If you’d like more information please let me know. Thank you in advance for your help!

can you upload a small gig file showing the issue?

can you upload a small gig file showing the issue?

It will be the same gig file for both. My studio is in post concert disarray, but I’ll try to get the core system setup when I get home. This will be the first day I get to go home while the sun is up in weeks.

RAACL Set S26 FINALplus title.gig (2.1 MB)

Sorry this took so long to upload. I wanted everything set up exactly as it was for the performance, and it took a lot longer to set up everything while the end of the semester was going on. As it is it takes about a half hour to get everything running starting from when I turn on the first rack.

The gig file is the exact same one used at the concert. 15th song in the setlist, 6th in the rackspace is the one that happened to be missing the marker to stop the playhead in the SAFP for the show. I have set the marker and saved it numerous times. I also noticed that one of the stereo audio routing I did is missing in the rackspace as well.

Again, as long as the playhead stops at the end of a song it won’t crash. If the playhead stays on after the SAFP, AFP(s), and MFP have stopped it is usually only a matter of time before a crash will occur. Gig performer will get stuck, Windows will grey it out saying this program has become unresponsive, and I’ll have to manually shut it down with no crash log.

This problem has been pretty consistent with various different setups and configurations and variations on the current setup; sometimes centered on an RME Babyface Pro FS, sometimes centered on an RME DigifaceUSB.

The current setup for this show was/is:

Microsoft Surface Pro 10 for Business Core Ultra 7 165U 32Gigs DDR5

Surface Dock 2 and Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock

StarTech 16 port USB hub/switch (plugged into Thunderbolt 4 dock)

MIDI: is mioXL using rtp midi over ethernet (2 keyboards, midi drumkits (edrumming 10 plus Roland TMC-6, and a midi drumpad)

I have a bluetooth midi device SMC-PAD Pocket which is a 4x4 MIDI pad for controlling GP while on stage.

I have an Akai APCmini MkII hooked up via MIDI USB for controlling lights.

Audio: RME DigifaceUSB hooked up to Behringer Ultra-curve Pro via SPDIF that goes to FOH, Focusrite Clarett+ Octopre and Behringer ADA8200 via ADAT 24bit 48Khz.

Video: Built in display, portable USB-C 1080p monitor (Mainly used for Totalmix FX and ShowXpress during show), 720p Projector (used with OBS to play videos during show), 2 more duplicated 1080P displays for lyric extension for performers on stage, and a Samsung Galaxy S8 tablet using second screen casting to the Surface Pro and duplicating the main desktop with input devices enabled so I can control GP anywhere on stage or in the house with it.

Other misc devices:

Chauvet Xpress1024 DMX controller and Chauvet AN2 for artnet (dmx over ethernet)

There is a rack with the mioXL, and AN2 with a dedicated Wifi7 router for MIDI and DMX. For the show I ran a 100ft Cat6 cable from the Surface Dock to the router with no issues. I have also done it over Wifi7 with no issues.

Software running:

OBS (for playing video for show), OSC for OBS (for controlling OBS with GP), Windows MIDI and Music Settings App, Totalmix FX with OSC and Totalmix Remote Server enabled, Chauvet ShowXpress, SMC-PAD Pocket BT MIDI app which uses its own version of BOME to run, GP 5.1.6 (waiting to upgrade after this gets looked at - summer is a time where I can recreate everything from the ground up with what I’ve learned over the past year).

That is about it. Again, I have run into the problem before with most of above not running. Everything runs great together unless the playhead does not stop at the end of a song. This problem has persisted before the new Windows MIDI stack and after. You should be able to get the VSTs I was running from the gig file.

I know user error could very well be the issue, and I look forward to learning how GP works better. Thank you for your time!

Can you upload the Audio File used in SAFP?

Here you go.

What is the exact file name?

00 - Click Track Green_Day_Boulevard_of_Broken_Dreams CUE.mp3

OK, can you post a screenshot of the MARKER LIST VIEW ?

This the screenshot of what you wanted.

This is what all the other click tracks look like.

OK, so the marker is missing in the SAFP?
And the issue is that when this marker is missing and therefore the stop action then Gig Performer has an issue with the playhead enables after SAFP has reached the end of the audio file?

Did you try a simple gig file with only SAFP or AFP or MFP and in any combination to reproduce the issue?

I just tested the SAFP, linked to global play and when SAFP stops at the end of the audio file and global play still active => no issue.

I will try to record the issue early next week. My last day before summer break is this Friday. One of the first things I’m planning for next week is to start to rebuild our system from the ground up. Before I do that I’ll use OBS to record recreating the problem: first with the gig file I uploaded, then from scratch with the simplest possible scenario (as I know it). Thanks for your help and time!

There are too many variables in your gig file for it to be diagnosed properly. You’ll have to recreate the problem using the smallest number of plugins/rackspaces/files possible while still displaying the issue(s) and then upload that simplified gig file here.

MIDICRASHTEST.gig (193.5 KB)

Here is as watered down of a Gig file as I could do. I have a video demonstrating the crash, but either it is too big, or I do not have permissions to upload a video. After editing it sits at about 100MB at 720P which was about the smallest I could make it as an mp4.

I am getting ready to rebuild our entire performance rack from scratch centered on an RME UFX III which came it a few days early. I’m also going to redo all gig files and rackspaces from scratch now that I’m on summer break, but wanted to get this out there first.

If you need anything else from me please let me know. Thanks!

Thanks for uploading that simplified gig file. I was able to reproduce an issue that involves the MIDI File Player and have reported it to the developers. It would cause the freeze you were experiencing.
