GP Relayer: Record and live loop clips in Ableton

Still wrangling the trial to see what’s feasible. I’ve tried lots but can’t get this to work, please help!

My aim is to use GP for what it’s good at, then feeding it into Ableton to use Ableton for fast clip recording and composition prototyping/creation.

I’ve got GP Relayer sending audio to a receiving GP Relayer in Ableton Live, in an Audio Track. I can definitely hear it but when I tell Ableton to record a clip of a session, when playing back or inspecting it I find only silence.

I saw a vid where a person had set up two tracks; one to receive to a track that outputs to Sends Only, and another Audio Track that has its In receiving from that track. In that setup I’ve been able to record a clip if the track’s monitor isn’t Auto, but live looping use sucks because you can’t hear it once triggered without the Monitor set to Auto.

I’ve removed the Audio Output blocks to ensure what I hear comes from Ableton.

While I am mentioning live looping, my goal is to build up many sessions/clips for fast reuse in composing. I wish I could get it to work like Ableton normally does when not using GP and its Relayer, but I can’t. I haven’t posted this in Ableton’s forums because this only happens with GP Relayer feeding into it.

Any ideas what I’m missing to get it working? Or is it not possible and there’s some other alternative?

Doubt it’s relevant but I’ve got an Arturia Keylab 61 mk3.

Does this tutorial help? How to use GP Relayer with Ableton Live

That’s where I started and unfortunately not.

I also forgot to mention that I can definitely see the levels in the track, I can hear it, then arm the track, then press the button of a session’s clip to start recording. However after recording stops the clip can be triggered and has the right duration but it is silent. Inspecting the waveform and it is definitely full of only silence.

I’m sure Ableton will only ever record the track input. Because GP Relayer is an insert plugin, you can’t record its output on the same track. So you will need to use a second track like you mentioned.

Ok cool, so yeah I did have the two track thing according to Gig Performer’s YouTube video called “How to Record Gig Performer’s Audio in Ableton”, which didn’t work for live looping.
I’ve now got my issue 90 percent sorted because that video is wrong for live looping. For live looping you need to set your track with the GP Relay to output to Main, not Sends Only, and set its monitor to In so you always hear it and the loop track/s Monitor to off.
Now I can play along to loops I create on the fly
So I’m almost there, I just can’t hear Ableton’s metronome anymore for counting me in to the loop start, but I guess I can get used to not having it.
