GP and QLC+ for lights

Quick overview of how I run lights in rack spaces in GP and can have everything lock into song BPM. I use and Entec dmx box mounted in the Mac rack.

I also used something similarly, meaning using GP for controlling DMX lights via OSC and QLC+.

I assume you use a clicktrack?

The bands I play in doesn’t use that, although I tried with a signal/audio line where the kick drum can trigger changes, but it is not full proof, because our drummer doesn’t always play a song the same twice (which is ok with me). For the triggering I use the new Envelope.

What always works, and what I (also) use is 6 dedicated pads on my controller, where 4 change the ‘scene’ and two are effect buttons (e.g. stroboscope effect).

Song changes are sent to QLC+ so I can have different (4) scenes/chases and 2 effects per song. So when I change verse or chorus I can hit quickly one of the 4 buttons the change.

However, if we would use clicktracks, I think your way is the best way to go (using a premade MIDI file).

Note that GP is probably the only application that can be so flexible to use either your or my method of controlling DMX.

I use a midi out to control light scene sequences in showexpress as I move through song parts in gp5. No click because our band feels we should be more organic and spontaneous. Sometimes we loop an intro while making announcements, skip a song, extend a solo etc based on reading the audience.
