Global rackspace general question

Hi folks. I searched this, but am still not understanding the use of global rack space, and also need clarity on midi in the global rack space.

You see to me, the use of a global rack space would be BEFORE creating a rack space. For instance, I may have a global rack space for recording. Or one for a certain live gig. And a different one for another gig.

Isn’t that the idea? In my mind I see myself placing all the hardware plugins I want to use for an entire setup - then use them in rackspaces modifed for each song….

But I think you have to create a rackspace, then add a global rack space and import it into the rack space. I’m confused.

Then version 4 does not support MIDI in and out in the global rack space, but Version 5 does? This will give me reason the upgrade if so.

This is a newbie question and I understand it may be frustrating. Finally getting going with this software - stationary after 2.5 years on a motorcycle - and gig performer will be the heart and soul of my live system…..but there’s a learning curve. Thank you.

The main difference between GP4 and GP5 with respect to the global rackspace is that MIDI can also be sent to/from the Global Rackspace. But there are many different ways to use it - you certainly don’t “import” it - it’s used in conjunction with local rackspaces.

Also, there are many other reasons to consider GP5, the addition of MIDI to the global rackspace was a very minor enhancement compare to other features.

I compiled some resources for the Global rackspace here.

I use the global rackspace for some simple post-processing. Typically a limiter and a reverb.

I can imagine that a keyboard player would use for one or two instruments that are almost always needed (especially if the settings of the instruments do not need to change).

There’s no such thing like ‘importing’ the global rackspace in a normal rackspace. You only use the ‘to global rackspace’ and ‘from global rackspace’ plugins in a normal rackspace to send/receive the audio (and in gp5 also MIDI) signal to/from the global rackspace. If you don’t want to use the global rackspace in a particular rackspace, you simply don’t send the signal to it.

As a keyboard player, I tend to think the Global Rackspace is a great place to put sample-heavy instruments that you use (without changing the samples, themselves) repeatedly. This is because I believe you save substantial ram as compared to duplicating those instruments in different local rackspaces.

Thank you for the kind responses. Using global rack space for efficiency makes a lot of sense. Buying the upgrade today. This also makes sense. Peace and once again, this forum is one of the best ever.

Great! Enjoy Gig Performer!

I would just add, there is only one Global Rackspace per Gig, and the GR is not “before” or “after” the “local” rackspaces, it is more like “parallel” or separate - but you can send audio or MIDI to the other rackspaces from the GR, or from the GR to the local rackspaces. In fact you can do both simultaneously, sending audio/MIDI from the GR to a local rackspace and then returning it to the GR, or vice-versa. You could even route your audio to that it both goes from your interface to the GR and then to a rackspace, but also goes to that rackspace from your interface and then to the GR! So many possibilities…
