Hi. This question probably also could be asked in the Reason forum as well but since it involves Gig Performer I figure it couldn’t hurt to ask here. I’m not having any luck with getting any devices in the Reason Rack Plugin via using the widgets on Gig Performer. Basically for starters I wanted to able to control filter frequency on the Reason NNXT sampler but I’m unable to get the Reason NNXT sampler to respond to the widget. This may well be user error or there’s something funky with the MIDI implementation on the Reason Rack Plugin. If anyone here is using the Reason Rack Plugin with GP and has some tips on doing this that would be greatly appreciated! I’m using the latest version of GP and Mac OS Monterey and I’m using Rosetta as the Reason Rack Plugin requires it. Thanks!
I hadn’t used Reason in some time so I tried it quickly on my Intel Mac. I found that while a Reason knob could control a GP widget, a GP widget would not control that same Reason knob. However, I was using an older version of Reason. So I updated to the latest version and now (as you can see from attached video) it works fine in both directions…I tried with both VST3 and AU version ( the latter format I generally never use).
However, that said, no guarantees when running under Rosetta or running GP native and running plugins under Rosetta - see the last paragraph of this blog article for more on that.
Thanks dhj for checking out the reason rack plugin on your Intel Mac.I’m an early user of Reason having started a version 3. I stopped at 10 as I got an M1 MacMini and Reason 10 doesn’t work on M1 Macs. The Reason Rack Plugin in Gig Performer other than the widget issue works really well with Rosetta with low CPU around 4%. One of Reason’s strengths is that is not demanding in the CPU department. The sequencer I’m not crazy about but the onboard instruments like the NNXT are quite good. I did get a reply from Reason support saying they are planning on having M1 native support but they don’t know when. Thanks Again!
You don’t mention exactly how you are running things, what format you’re using for Reason, etc. If you are running both Gig Performer and Reason under Rosetta, the widget communication should absolutely work fine if you have the latest version of Reason (and GP).
However, if you’re running the Apple Silicon native version of GP and you’re trying to use the AU version of Reason, so that only Reason is running on Rosetta, then that’s what I mean by “all bets are off”
I was using Rosetta on Gig Performer and Reason and for some reason I couldn’t get The Reason rack to respond. Interestingly when starting a new rackspace and inserting a new plugin I click on Reason Studios it displays 3 choices. The first 2 are identical and say Reason Rack Plugin (Audiounit) The third choice says Reason Rack Plugin Effect (Audiounit). Last night I tried using the second listed Reason Rack Plugin (Audiounit) and had the issue with the widgets, This evening I tried the first listed Reason Rack Plugin and now the widgets work. Success! Not sure why Reason Rack Plugin is identically listed twice but the bottom line is I got the widgets to work.
Try the VST3 version please.
I looked in the Plug-in Manager in GP and there’s no VST3 version of the Reason Rack Plugin listed. Interestingly in the 2 listed Reason Rack Plugin (Audiounit) the first entry category says Midieffects and the second entry says Synth
I looked in the VST3 folder and the Reason Rack Plugin is in there but for some reason it’s not listed in the Plugin Manager of Gig Performer
Yeah, that’s what I suspected. You are not running Gig Performer under Rosetta. You are running it natively and it can see only the AU version due to Apple’s sleazy trick.
You need to run GP itself under Rosetta.
Actually I have Open Using Rosetta checked
I rescanned my plugins in Gig Performer and now the VST3 version of Reason Rack is listed. I will try the VST3 version. Why do you recommend using the VST3 version instead of the Audiounit version?
I now see the advantage of using the VST3 version of the Reason plugin. The parameters of the plugin are listed when using the VST3 version. Thanks again for all of your help!
