2 weeks ago I was invited to perform at a New Music festival in Ulm, Germany. On the program were medium size ensemble pieces by composers Olga Neuwirth and David Lang.
Since Olga’s piece asks for 2 keyboard players (playing a large pallette of classic keys sounds and a sampler) as well some treatment of the solist (soprano) I suggested to the musical director to take care of this using GP.
And here is the set up we used:
- MacMini M4 w/ 64 Gb RAM and an external SSD for instrument libraries.
- Small touch monitor for the Mac. iPad for parts and also program changes of keys2. Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad
- RME Fireface ucx II
- Keys player 1: Studiologic SL73 (plus pedals)
- Keys player 2: Roland A49
- Akai LPD8: operated by the singer to turn fx on/off.
Audio routing:
- Outs (to FOH): Keys 1: 3+4, Keys 2 + voice fx: 5+6
- In (from FOH): Voice
I used two instances of GP. Each Keyboard player had his own instance.
Keys 1 was mostly standard classic keyboard sounds (Hammond, Farfisa, Rhodes, church organ, detuned honky tonk piano, etc.) realized with pianoteq, keyscape, arturia and kontakt.
Keys 2 were almost exclusively custom made samples of voices and sound fx programmed in kontakt.
The delay fx (soundtoys) for the singer was integrated in a rackspace within the instance of keys 2.
The whole set up worked without a single hiccup!
