Gig Performer Beginners Guide

Hi folks.
I’m in the process of creating a fast track Beginners Guide for all of our new Gig Performer users.
This’ll be a small bite sized set of videos to get you up and running quickly and easily.
I’ll also be creating some feature specific videos so if it’s something you’re interested head over to my channel sometime.
The videos will be uploaded in the coming weeks.

Also if there’s any topics you’d like me to cover let me know here, my socials , or YT channel
Hit the link below for a quick heads up.

Hi Marty
I am playing in a metalband, and we have made a lot of videos to our songs.
We would like to run them in sync with our live playing.
So can you make a tutorial on how to playback video in sync with GP…..if it’s even possible.
(I am on a windows platform )

Meanwhile, you can try some ideas from this thread: Video Player plugin in Gig Performer - #8 by kunst4life

Hi !!
Maybe this would be something to look at.

We will need to get some sort of midi data out of GP into your video playing software.

Let me know if I’m in the ballpark with this …

A lot of professional systems use OSC for cueing. When we did The Wall last month (June), I had an action on the first song part of several songs that sent the appropriate OSC message to FoH

That looks very interesting. I will dig into it right away.
Thanx a lot🤘

I have to agree. He’s very concise and helpful, with a touch of humour, makes learning easy. Well done Marty full marks.

I’ve seen some of your videos and they’ve helped. Thank you! However, I’m looking for a video or documentation that gives a detailed overview on how best to setup rackspaces per song, the global rackspace and how best to use pre-recorded multiple tracks for backing tracks using SAFPs–and if that’s even the best approach.

Here’s what I’m attempting to accomplish:

· Create a rackspace per song with each song having multiple pre-recorded instrument and vocal backing tracks in M4A, MP3 or FLAC format (e.g., Drums, Bass, Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals, Horns, etc.). I’ve managed to wire up several SAFPs for the separate backing tracks, but I’ve yet to see how to start/stop them simultaneously. I’d prefer not to have to use a DAW, like Ableton or Pro Tools, to achieve this goal.

· I want to be able to mute any given backing track as needed for each song and/or depending on if there are other live players to play those muted track parts (i.e., I don’t want to have to create multiple rackspace versions of each song with whichever track(s) I don’t want to play).

· I currently have a MacBook Pro M5 with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interface that I plan on using for gigging and I have a Win11 PC with a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 for creating and testing songs at home before adding them to my live performance rig.

· I need to be able to attach one or more plugins for each audio I/F input channel that I’ll use for live playing (e.g., mike reverb, guitar distortion, etc.).

· I want to use a MIDI player for playing keyboard parts live that can switch the keyboard instruments per song (using a KORG Extreme) or that can use synth plugins if I decide to use just a MIDI keyboard controller for gigging instead.

· I need a single start/stop foot switch control to start/stop songs for live performances, but I want to use just a button control for song setup and creation at home.

· I want to save separate configurations for my Win11 home PC and gigging MacBook laptop using different audio interfaces (e.g., Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 for home, Scarlett 2i4 for live) so I don’t have to switch audio I/Fs and backing track drives as needed (e.g., pre-recorded backing tracks are stored on my home D: drive, but I’ll use a USB-C external SSD for the MacBook).

· Once I have a working example (or template), I want to put each song/rackspace in one or more setlists and easily add, move, or remove a song from any given setlist.

· I’m also not sure what I should put in the global rackspace since each song will have different instruments and configurations, but I presume there will be some subset of configurations that will remain consistent for all rackspace songs.

From what I’ve researched before purchasing, it appeared that all I’m attempting to do is doable with Gig Performer 5, but I’ve yet to find any video or detailed documentation that depicts how to achieve all my goals. Any help or link to a video or documentation that will provide the information I need to achieve my aforementioned goals will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. I’ve seen several of those videos, but as far as I can tell there are still none that I’ve found that talk about how to setup an SAFP for each pre-recorded track that I want to play to. For example, I have a song with drums, bass, rhythm guitar and backing vocals that I want to play lead guitar and vocals with. I can wire up the individual backing tracks and my AIF for my guitar and mike, but I haven’t found how to start/stop the song for all tracks simultaneously. If you know of one please point me to it.

You can use the ‘Sync with host’ button on each of the SAFP instances and then use the global GP playhead to start/stop the players.

If you don’t want to do it that way, you can map each Play parameter of the SAFP to a widget, and then widget link them all.

Either way, my advice is: walk before you run. GP is capable of doing everything you listed above, but there’s a lot to learn on the road to getting there.

It’s a free routing system, so you’ll often find there are many different ways to achieve the same goal. Which ways you decide will be up to you. Take the time, learn the app, and you’ll naturally discover things that work for you.

Great! Thank you! I think using the global playhead method makes the most sense since I’ll want to do this for all song/rackspaces. I hear you on learning to walk before you run (and I agree), but patience is not one of my virtues and I want to get up and running as soon as possible so I can start gigging again (either by myself or duo or trio). Thank you again for your suggestions.
