Hello everyone. Not a real GP question but that is why i am chosing the right sub category. Maybe someone knows the answer for my question
Some people uses midi guitar to play some other instruments using gp and vsts. And i know that basically a synth will do what i am looking for (at least technically) but if i use a midi hexaphonic usb pickup, and i want to use a specific plugin made mainly for guitar fx like “helix native” how could i convert this midi signal to guitar signal? I have a normal electric guitar, but i would like to use this hardware with 6 different instances of gp and vsts, so that i can manipulate every single string individually and make alt tunnings.
You can’t “convert” midi to audio, but what you can do is trigger sounds with it like it a synth, but you said you don’t want to do that. You really need to start out with audio. The only thing I’m aware of that carries both analog audio, separating each string and sends midi are things like the Roland GK pickups or the piezo pickups built into some guitars. These usually require a 13 pin cable to carry all the signals.
You would need a plugin that converts midi to audio, for guitar that would be a sample instrument, like Native Instruments Electric Mint or Electric Sunburst, or something else, depending on what kind of sound you’re after. Then maybe you’ll also need some guitar amp sim like the built in stuff from TH-U or something better - again, depending on your requirements.
Yes. I thought about this after publishing my question, but also, i was thinking that i would need to try different vstis just to find one that have a nice dry natural signal. I have never used guitar vsts but i hope they have options to. Be used without any specific effect.
Just out of curiosity, if you have a real guitar, why do you want to go through midi? No matter how good those plugins are, they surely don’t beat the real thing.
I have explained that i would like to use 6 different instances. The crazy idea would be use a pitch shift effect for every single guitar string, but actually, i was thinking that is not required, cause with midi, you can tune every single string independently. Anyway, there are some scenarios whare is better to have some strings isolated from each other. Just thinking out of the box
This is exactly what the 13 pin cables were invented for that I referenced earlier. I believe it’s 6 to carry your analog guitar sound for each string, + 6 midi + 1 power (to GK pickup or similar built ins). This way you can independently pitch shit each string (still analog audio) and have your midi too. I think this is what you were looking to do right?
The pickup i want to buy is this one, midi over usb only. Boss has released a new gk hexa analogue pickup that does not use th 13 pin but a 3.5mm cable. The issue with this new pickup is you also need another and expensive boss device to understand the 6 analog signals and then send to via usb to a computer.
Midi guitar 3 is now using creating an add_in for analogue hexa pickups, which (to my understanding) could improve tracking and latancy even further.
Im just a hobbist so i do not consider to spend big amount of money on such devices so maybe i will buy the Fishman for its simplicity.
