Can GP respond to transport w/o chasing tempo?

Hi.

I have had success with setting rackspaces to ‘Sync tempo with external MIDI clock’ and sending that clock from Cubase.

By success, I mean the GP playhead and the drum plugins I have in GP start and stop with Cubase as desired and the GP tempo will also follow the Cubase tempo if I change the tempo from in Cubase.

I’m now interested to know if I can have the same start/stop functionality without actually chasing the tempo. IOW, can I set up GP to respond to MIDI transport commands while not chasing the clock. ( I would just manually set both Cubase and GP to the same tempo.)

The reason I ask is because with some other softwares I have observed that they actually sync better when simply set to the same tempo rather than when set for one of them to chase tempo. This is sometimes called “freewheeling”. Of course, they still have to start/stop/rewind together (and they do for the cases I’m thinking of).

So, basically I’m just asking is it possible to do this with GP?

If not, I suggest that this is another useful possibility to have available.

Thanks.

I was able to sync the transports between Cubase and GP without syncing the tempo.

  • In GP – The Sync tempo with external MIDI clock option was turned off.
  • In Cubase – in Project Synchronization Setup > Sources, I had MIDI Timecode enabled
  • In Project Synchronization Setup > Destinations > MIDI Clock Destinations, I had the desired MIDI output selected.

Thanks for your reply Ed!

Your video demonstrates the desired action, but I don’t quite understand the setup.

What is the “appropriate” MIDI port?

Is your big picture that Cubase is configured to be a MIDI TImecode slave?

My mistake. You don’t need to set the MIDI Input for the timecode settings.
You only need to set the destination port. I’ll adjust my previous post to reflect that.

This is my setup in Cubase:

Thanks @edm11, I will look into that. Cheers!
