Hello, I have some undesirable playback issues that are seemingly random and I would love to track down the issue to try to prevent it from happening.
Symptom: When global playback is playing, sometimes it gets hung up cauing the metronome click to mute and any audio to crackle and and temporarily cutout… Similar to scratching a record or a cd skipping. It happened to me twice today while playing live. One of the times it was for a fraction of a second. The other time was for what seemed like 2 to 3 seconds. It’s probably happened 8 times total out of several hundred hours of using GP.
I don’t have any good theories for what might be causing it. I don’t think it is pc processor or RAM. Today when it happened, the GP resource meter was at around 16-20% and I wasn’t using any intense plugins.
This is especially bad when this happens while I am using tracks in the audio player because when everything starts back up, Audio Player is no longer sync’d with global playback metronome
I am using 8th Gen i7, 32 GB RAM, Windows 10, ASIO4ALL driver.
I also had audio glitches when testing Gig Performer and even got excellent support from the Gig Performer team. They turned my laptop settings inside out but all was fine on that part.
Then I ran into a forum entry somewhere on the internet where they suggested to use a external USB hub.
No glitches anymore since!
You don’t mention which audio interface you’re using. This sounds like something that is either related to the audio driver/interface or some other event on the low, system level.
You mention that you use ASIO4ALL drivers which is ok, but if you have the native drivers for your interface - they may actually work better.
Finally … there are many things one should do on windows to optimize it for live performance. It could be that some other process wants to use audio periodically while you’re playing. Could be that there is something scheduled and runs from time to time…
Here is a very good starting point written by people at Ableton Live. Some great suggestions in there, general guidelines as well as tools to try to troubleshoot the issue.
I am using Behringer UMC204HD which is a basic usb powered interface. I have the inputs disabled in ASIO4ALL and in GP… only using the outputs for my VI’s/Tracks/FX out of Outputs 1&2, and click/cues Output 3.
The Ableton articles will be very helpful. I read a couple of them just now and will adjust settings and experiment. Thank you for the link!
Great. I would suggest that you use the Behringer’s ASIO drivers instead of ASIO4ALL if you can.
I personally use their drivers and they are very stable.
