Anyway to run Ableton-like drum rack in GP4? Or use ableton plugins in GP?

Brand new to GP and I’m looking forward to jumping into it. I see a lot of people here run ableton and gig performer in sync, but I’m curious if there’s a way to bypass having two DAWs running at once and use some ableton plugins in GP or alternatively if anyone can suggest some straightforward no frills drum rack-like plugins that work well in GP. As I tend to get a little heavy handed with effects and VSTis, it’d be nice if I could trigger samples on a midi drum pad without having to go for one of the more resource intensive sampler emulations with a bunch of additional features that I won’t use/need. My gigging computer is a laptop that’s a few years old and my primary reason for purchasing GP was to trim CPU usage/latency wherever possible.

If possible, I would love to be able to use some of the other useful one-trick ponies in Ableton as well (Looper, for example). It seems that most of the straightforward, no-frills plugins these days are made by DAW makers for use exclusively with their software.

Hi @joshb, welcome!

As you’ve highlighted, there’s no way to use the Ableton inbuilt plugins in other apps.

For a nice free drum sampler, it’s hard to beat Sitala:

Thanks for the suggestion! This is great! Looks like it’ll get the job done for the most part, and it’s not too heavy on the additional features. I’m definitely going to try this out.

On a side note, I noticed you’re a moderator of this forum. Not sure if you’re affiliated officially with GP or not, but either way do you happen to know if there are plans in future iterations of Gig Performer to incorporate more GP-exclusive plugins/functionalities to expand its use as a live performance DAW? Or is the end goal as a super efficient and intuitive software that will only use third party plugins? I imagine at a certain point of adding functions it starts to become more like a traditional DAW and loses some of its economical CPU load, but adding certain plugins like live loopers or one-shot triggers would be great, in my opinion.

Nah, just an enthusiastic user

I’m sure it will always continue to develop functionalities to improve/enhance its role as the centre of your live performance rig. But in terms of plugins like loopers/samplers etc, I don’t expect that will be a focus - there are already so many great plugins out there, and everyone has their own preference, that development time is more likely to be spent on core functionality.

From GP4 there did start to be some third-party plugins included, such as the LostIn70’s plugins and a special version of Overloud TH-U. This addition has been great, as it allowed a number of template files to be available for new users - often a lot easier start than a blank canvas!

Great, and thanks again for the reply! Really looking forward to getting into the software and happy to see GP4 has such a friendly, helpful community surrounding it. Hopefully I’ll be on the forum answering questions instead of asking them before too long.
