Advancing Setlist with Pedal (options)

Could we get a list of options for advancing through a Setlist (Next Song/Next Part) using pedals? I found a post covering this using MIDI messages, but would this work with an old-school footswitch connected into the “footswitch” jack on a MIDI controller? I would assume that a footswitch like that would be sending some sort of MIDI message. What about a Bluetooth (Airturn?) pedal? Any other options?

While we’re at it, would the assignment of these pedal options be done in the same location within GP, regardless if it’s a hardwired footswitch to a controller or a Bluetooth pedal or some other pedal option?

Thanks, Forum Experts!

I hesitate to respond, because I do not have much to offer. But, since no one else has responded, I’ll try.

I guess I would want to know what the “old-school” footswitch is? What type of data does it send out?

There are threads about scripts to convert PC messages to CC messages:

(But maybe now it can be done without scripting?)

Within GP, you can use the GP midi filter to convert cc messages to PC messages:

Sorry if this is not helpful, but I figured I’d give it a shot.

Actually, I tried simply connecting my old Boss F5-5U footswitch to my Korg Kross 2 (footswitch jack) and discovered it sends MIDI! I assigned it in the Setlist Options and I’m good to go. I’m curious, however, how to go about doing this with a Bluetooth pedal footswitch.

Maybe this would help?

Don’t do that !
I used to use an AirTurn Bluetooth page-turner pedal on my iPad until I had a real nightmare during a gig where the thing turned pages any which way. It looked funny in the middle of a song.

In rehearsal, why not, but never again in a gig!

David, what do you use now instead?

Wired pedals connected to GP, such that GP can send MIDI to the iPad using RTP-MIDI.

When you say, “wired pedals connected to GP”, do you mean via the method I mentioned earlier - a wired pedal connected into a controller which is then MIDI-connected to GP through an interface?

A pedal without integrated circuits is nothing more than an electrical switch and does midi-wise exactly nothing! The midi message is then created by the controller to which this pedal (switch) is connected to… this might be a keyboard, a midified effects device, or maybe a dedicated midi-pedal controller like these:

Anyway, the midi message which is sent when pressing down the pedal can be configured in most cases to be whatever you need/like - this had to be done in the controller to which the pedal is connected.
You can also change an incoming midi message within Gig Performer to be something else (i.e. CC#30 to CC#40, or #CC30 to Aftertouch, etc.)
The options are endless, but the effort to get what you need might vary… sometimes it might need scripting, but most things are just easily available to be used without “wizardry”.

I meant anything wired triggering directly or indirectly a MIDI message in GP:

  • a “switch” pedal connected to another controller (here the controller sends the MIDI message)
  • a “switch” pedal connected to an audiofront device as mentioned by @schamass (you always need one as a spare)
  • a MIDI pedal which send MIDI directly to GP (usually USB-wired)

For the rest, the post from @schamass is pretty well detailed
