Hello, I have created about 5 songs in a set list. The overall mix and volumes are fine within each individual song, but when I change between songs there is discrepancy of volume.
Is there a best way to adjust the total output of a song?
I’d like to avoid having to go into every single instrument in every single rackspace to adjust every single thing with a volume knob.
A little more context: my band is a trio where everyone is playing midi instruments and triggering GP. Each player has 1 stereo output, plus two vocal outputs. Each of us have midi volume pedals for our respective outputs, but I’d like to keep it for small changes up or down so that a massive incr ase in volume isn’t possible.
With so many different VSTs and softsynths running, each of us switching between a few in one song, it would be a ton of work to go and adjust every instrument in each song.
Like I said, the soft synths change from song to song. The only thing that remains the same throughout the set are the vocals, which I have running thru FX in the global menu.
Basically, I’m looking for a way to raise all instruments in a rack space or entire song, like a master fader almost. But I wouldn’t want these changes to effect the global rackspace, because the vocal processing is consistent from track to track and doesn’t need to be adjusted.
You could use different outputs of your global trio mixer audio mixer and put an additional gain plugin.
All your instruments go out to this additional output and to the new gain plugin.
This way you can use a global widget to control the instruments level.
In the local rackspace link a widget to this global widget and you can set the overall level of the instruments individually per local rackspace.
Basically, each musicians triggers 1 or more vsts, which eventually get to the “trio mixer”, there, I can make volume adjustments on a per player basis. After the “trio Mixer” the signal goes to the global rack, where they feed into the “Global Trio Mixer”. I have those channels mapped to midi volume pedals (expression pedals), so each player can make small vol adjustments. Also in the global rack you’ll see my vocal chains.
My main concern is, how to adjust all the volumes of the main rackspace. Keep in mind this rack is used for only one song, all the other songs are loaded with different instruments etc. In rehearsal yesterday, we’d work on a song and it would be sounding good and balanced, but then when we changed to the next song, I’d have to turn up my overall speaker volume to get it to the same vol as the song before. The instruments would sound good, but then my vocals would be too loud, since they’re processed in the global rack.
Is there a way to have one local rackspace widget proportionally increase or decrease some or all of the the channel volumes in my local 16 channel mixer AKA “Trio Mixer” ?
I don’t fully understand your solution. Can you re-explain? Before you do, let me clarify 2 things:
In the screenshot I shared, there is only 1 stereo pair coming out of the “Global Trio Mixer” going to my audio out, but that was just for a simple rehearsal sound situation. For performance, all channels go to separate audio outs.
The reason why I do not want to go from the local rackspace to audio outs, but instead go to global first, is because the global “trio mixer” is mapped to each band members expression pedals for volume. I don’t want to map the volume pedal for every new song. By passing the signal to the global rack, I only have to program that once.
What is the reason that you have to adjust levels between songs.
Can’t you set the levels correctly?
Another approach could be using separate instances of gig performer. One for the vocals and the other for the instruments.
Or when you insist of using just 1 instance of gig performer, then use a gain widget after your trio mixer for each instrument channel and use global widgets linked to local widgets and with widget groups you only need 1 midi controller to move them all.
You can also use an additional mixer and control the levels via widgets.
Or with scripting and just 1 widget in the local, and 1 widget in the local rackspace you can adjust the channel levels of the additional mixer.
