When I connect my phone, I get a dialog where I choose what I want to do, e.g. USB tethering, File Transfer or MIDI.
You should check if your tablet/phone supports MIDI.
On some devices MIDI needs to be enabled explicitly in the Developer Options (which are hidden by default).
