Are you completly satisfied with your new UM790 Pro? Advantages/disadvantages?
I would choose this one, I am very happy from mine, which is quite close from this one. But it seems to be unavailable by Geekom.
2.9GHz for a single core is very nice, but very rare when it comes to the new multi-multi-core CPU…
EDIT: still available on the Amazon market place for 469€
my recommendation is to run a mini pc with some good cooling, or build one yourself with watercooling (if you know what youre doing!)
I would say laptops get hot in the sun, you can even put the mini pc in like a 2U rack along with ur audio interface, usb hubs, etc. easier setup
That’s right when playing outside in the sun, shadow and cooling are important.
I use a stage ventilator for me and my mini-PC, which is indeed mounted in a small rack. And I have additional small USB powered PC ventilators at the back of the rack. My former mini-PC had a TDP of 60W and during a rehearsal, in summer without air conditioning, it stopped and I had to put a ventilator in front of it, which solved the problem. My current mini-PC has a TDP of around 30W and don’t get so hot, but still I have to take care if I play outside in the sun.
So far, I am satisfied with it. It is spec’d higher than my current Lenovo M920q and so gives me more scope and headroom for both RAM and CPU performance. I’ll probably start using it live with the upcoming GP5 release as it gives me a notional cut-off point for the swap over.
The only issue I noted at some point was a little bit of induced noise in the audio (I have a Motu M4 attached) so just need to get to the bottom of that… likely it may be down to the quality of the PSU, so need to try a couple of different ones.
Please let us know, when you solved this problem.
I use that unit. Very pleased. Upgraded to 64 gb ram but may pull one stalk out. I also added a 2nd SSD for storing samples on. I did quite a bit of research deciding between AMD and Intel processors and decided to go Intel. The reason is from what I understand the added cores of AMD do not really offer any benefit. The only way added cores are of value is if you open up additional instances of GP, and then each instance has its own dedicated core.
David, I think some plugins use multiple cores as well (within a single instance of GP).
But, I agree, I am not getting much benefit from the numerous cores my machine has (which do contribute to thermal issues). The bulk of the work is likely being done be a single thread on a single core.
Jeff
Come to think of it, you’re right. I have Diva and it has a button to push for multiple core use. However, it freaks out when I try to use it. On GP 3 it seemed to work. Any thoughts? strong text
There’s a lot of tutorial on youtube of custom mod for cooling mini-pc.
On GP4 with my old laptop, the multi core works fine but I didn’t run tests to see if it’s really efficient
