This sounds like it could be NRPN. Do all your CC 96 messages also have two other CC messags that vary slightly but always start with CC 96? Check this with the global midi monitor.

If that is what the MODX is trasnmitting you can convert NRPN into standard CC messages. Here’s a thread where I discoverd how:
